APPALLING
We had our wedding at Philip Shaw earlier this year. To say we were let down and disappointed is an understatement.
I had spent over twelve months liaising with the then events coordinator to ensure our day was everything we had hoped for. Two days out from our wedding, without warning, this specific events coordinator resigned. Extremely unprofessional on behalf of this individual and Philip Shaw as a whole.
But unfortunately the issues didn’t cease there. After being promised the world by these so called vendors, our wedding day proceeded to be a longitudinal list of failings. My husband and his groomsmen arrived at the venue prior to our ceremony to set up a back drop, and much to their disgrace found that the area of our ceremony had not been cleaned, as promised. This included dirty chairs, dead leaves and sticks all over the steps where we were getting married and random garden tiles scattered throughout. My husband and his groomsmen had no other choice but to clean these themselves. Not an ideal task to be doing on your wedding day.
Next we were confronted with guests coming up to us with complaints of hot beer, cider and soft drinks shortly after our ceremony. When we approached staff about this we were told that the fridge wasn’t working very well and no solution was put forward. We could see guests pouring out beers that we were paying for because they were hot. There was also little to no water provided, it was a 34 degree day. We had both elderly and pregnant women in attendance. We should not have had to specify that COLD water and drinks in general needed to be provided.
After the ceremony we went down to the butter factory where I had previously clarified that chairs would needed to be set up for everyone. There were no chairs. Guests were forced to go up to the ceremony location and move chairs themselves or sit on the grass. To further the unprofessionalism the cellar door manger was forced to climb through a window to get into the butter factory bar because she forgot her keys. Not long after this mid strength beer was “sold out” shortly after the ceremony.
We had hired outdoor furniture from the White Place which was to be used outside for guests only. Unfortunately throughout the afternoon we saw customers of the cellar door utilising this whilst drinking red wine. We were promised that any customers of the cellar door sitting outside whilst our ceremony was on would be ushered inside and that the cellar door would be closed at 4pm. Neither of these promises were fulfilled. It was clear that $15 wine tastings were being prioritised over our high-cost wedding.
When it was time to head up to the reception we were faced yet again with a list of inconveniences. My two friends that I had prearranged to check on everything in the cellar door ended up setting all of the tables along with place settings. This was not their job but yet again, we’re left with no choice. I had corresponded with both events coordinators as well as provided documentation of how I wanted the reception set. It didn’t end there.
After compiling a list of these failings, my husband and I went into Philip Shaw to speak with management. We were firstly greeted with apologies and embarrassment of how the day was run. We were then told to put all of this information into an email as a “formal complaint” which we did. Following on from this I received an unpleasant phone call from the cellar door manager denying all of this and further projecting incorrect accusations on to myself, my husband and our wedding guests. Little to no communication was received from the CEO, despite sending him a copy of this complaint and asking for a response. We are disgusted by the way Philip Shaw handled our complaint and took no ownership of the mistakes that were made. We would not recommend Philip Shaw for a wedding venue or a venue for any...
Read moreI was in town a few months ago visiting dear friends of mine. My girlfriend kindly introduced me to this fabulous venue. I state fabulous because I was stunned by the gorgeous gardens on exiting the car. I loved the stone walkway, the hedges and the greenery. I can only imagine just how stunning everything is if you were to have a party here at night time with the lights on... it's that kind of place.
The building itself is just lovely. Fireplace, wooden tables with configurations to sit couples through to larger groups and these fantastic table settings for tastings; everything was very well-thought out. And the scent in the air was of roasted chicken and olives that day (with a touch of rosemary... you have no idea just how tantalising that smell can be).
I thought we were going in for a tasting, and I do love my vino (white, red, bubbles, dessert, whereas my girlfriend is more a whites and bubbles lassie). Needless to say, we ended up staying for a light meal (because their menu is to die for) and an extra glass or two of wine. Don't shame us; neither of us were driving!
Absolutely fantastic service. As I'm from Queensland, you bet I also ordered a case of wine delivered (who wouldn't! Absolute madness) and I loved the kind suggestion I received at both the table and seconded at the counter from a different staff member I could buy a cold bottle or two from the fridge to take back on my journey (I was temporarily working in the area).
The staff here at Philip Shaw were incredibly knowledgeable, gave great advice (including allowances for dietary considerations for our table), and stunned me into gaping fish mode at their thoughtful suggestions for shipping and takeaways for a travelling worker. I simply cannot thank Philip Shaw enough. I've already ordered another case for gifts. Brilliant. And the Character Series...
Read moreThis is a review of the cellar door experience. The wine is always gonna depend on your palate.
We walked in for a tasting at 3.30pm and left at 4.50. But not in a good way. They had two staff on who just ignored anyone who was new to sit down. Maybe it was because we didn’t look the part. Well, their loss since I have a private cellar at home and don’t mess about if I like a good wine. The bearded fellow was making the hard sell to a group of 8 so our group of 3 was probably not appealing and why it took 20 mins after being seated for our first wine. Then the middle aged blonde woman with glasses just spent all her time with one couple in between having her own side drinks and smoke out the back. Meanwhile our group and a new group were just sitting…waiting… wasting the afternoon away with nothing. Finally the bearded fellow came over, nice chap don’t get me wrong. But he kept going back to the table of 8. Honestly, what was a 30 min tasting was an hour and 20 because of this farce. Then trying buy the bloody wine, the two servers were having chats (and wine for themselves) to a drunk couple rather than serving the other group who turned up and taking my money. And the final kicker, I bought $300 of wine and was still charged $15/head for tasting. I recommend the Hunter Valley, free tastings and you can easily smash 5-6 in a day because they get you in and out.
P.s. this was our second time at Philip Shaw and it was the same experience the first time and appears common from...
