A cool little part of South Australia, you can get here with a 30 minute drive from Whyalla. It shares the road to Port Bonython, and both places are able be viewed from this location quite easily. The lighthouse was built in 1883. It is not able to be climbed by the general public. You can walk around the base though, and even touch it, but just not enter it. There are no shops or fuel out here, so stock up on supplies if you plan to have lunch or a drink. There are camping facilities, but they're not glamorous, and you'll need to bring all you need with you. From here, you get beautiful views of the gulf, coastline, and across to the Southern Flinders Ranges. Dolphins, kanagroos and birdlife often are able to be observed. Unfortunately it was closed and a few signs no more intriguing than the average Wikipedia article were all that stood to greet me. The lighthouse keepers residence had been turned into a Sydney yuppies wet dream, an overpriced and souless Airbnb nestled in amongst roads as corrugated as the houses, and the same soulless flame emanating from some kind of oil refinery. It looked not too dissimilar from the villain's lair in the 2005 movie : ROBOTS. I know I sound bitter but I lost my lure and 2 hooks whilst fishing the eastern side....
Read moreThis is a great place to stay with a large group of people (3 bedroom + sleepout cottage). We stayed with family (19 people) and it kept everyone comfortable. Plenty of beds (lots of bunks) for everyone. Basic shower and toilet facilities. Good sized kitchen/fenced yard and laundry. Everyone enjoyed strolls along the beach, lighthouse and surrounding bush area. Playground about 600m away. Plenty of wildlife and fishing to enjoy.
