The Axel Stenross Museum is an Aladdin's cave of maritime history treasures. Although primarily focussed on the maritime history of Port Lincoln, this is in part also Australia's maritime story.

The Museum is well divided into separate parts of the story (explorers, fishing, equipment, boats etc). The friendly host provides a good briefing and the experience starts with a very interesting 20min video.

Don't be deceived by the simple shed like external appearance, this is well worth 2 or 3 hours of your time (more if you like to really mull over the wonders of how they achieved so much)

Sadly it was raining on our visit so no photos of the magnificent vessels outside but we could view them from indoors.

Entry is around $10 with the usual concessions and plenty of parking....

Best $20 ($10x2) spent on our holiday! This museum has something for everyone. Boats galore, history of these boats and their builders. The onsite accommodation the builders had and a fantastic story of how they moved it from the original site!! Fishing history, shark history linked to abalone fishing and a blacksmiths workshop to boot. We spent about 90 mins there and only really saw half the displays and equipment on show. Recommend you give yourself at least two and a half hours minimum to do it justice! Knotty the on duty volunteer was very knowledgeable and gave clear directions on the best way to view the exhibits. Will be back to finish off the...

Visited in April with some friends from Adelaide. Interesting collection, and plenty to look through if you’re interested in local maritime history. I do feel that the collection is a little overwhelming however and that the museum could reduce what is on display and improve the quality of the information available in association with each piece (which would be overwhelming based on the collection that is currently on public display). The local council should offer more funding for this to occur given the prominence of having a local maritime museum. Remember to collect a brochure and stamp so you can get a $1 discount per adult at other museums in...

To immerse yourself in Port Lincoln’s seafaring heritage there’s a first-rate maritime museum right on the water by the Lincoln Highway. There you’ll get to know the story of Axel Stenross, a Finnish ships’ carpenter who arrived in Port Lincoln in 1927 aboard the windjammer sv Olivebank and decided to stay for good. The museum shows off Steinross’s preserved living quarters, and the boatbuilding workshops and slipway that continue to function to this day. There’s a great collection of historic vessels in varying stages of restoration, as well as maritime artefacts to paint a picture of the historic fishing and cargo industries that were vital to Port Lincoln.

Wow! Probably the best maritime museum in Australia. We very much enjoyed our time here. The collection is extensive and impressive. The staff (all volunteers) have a wealth of knowledge to share. Lloyd, Brian and John had many stories and information to share when we visited. Allow plenty of time as there is so much to take in. Thanks once again! We will return :-) Here are some photos of this excellent museum. A 'must see' when visiting Port Lincoln!
