if Uluru (Ayers rock) is about one rock - a very big rock, then Purnululu (The bungle bungles) is about many rocks - many unique rocks.
we were here in Sept 2022, drove almost 3 hours from Kununurra via Victoria Hwy and Great Northern Hwy to the park access turn off - Spring Creek Track.
The 53 km access track is rocky, Sandy and corrugated with some creek crossing, you need 4WD and 1.5~2.5 hours for this section, and it's easyer than driving around Fraser Island in QLD.
we've stayed three nights in APT Wilderness lodge, and spent one+ day in Southern section of range - The Dome, Cathedral Gorge, Piccaninny Creek lookout, The Window and the Heli tour in afternoon; and one day on Northern section - Mini Palms Gorge, Echidna Chasm, Osmand Lookout and finally Kungkalanayi Lookout for sunset.
all walking trails are well signage and easy for most poeple - except Piccaninny Creek Trek to The Fingers. weather is hot in high 30's, better walk in early morning or late afternoon with plenty water + sunscreen + a hat and...
for most of self-drive, two night stay are good for the trip, but it can be done by one night stay.
Chinese used to describe the beauty of Mount Huang (黄山) with phrase:
五岳归来不看山 黄山归来不看岳
here in Kimberley we can say:
Argyle 归来不看shui (水/lake) Bungle...
Read moreThe tracks are worse than Gibb River road with corrugation, water crossings, washouts and sharp stones. Needless to emphasize that it is necessary to airdown the 4wd and keep the speed under limits to avoid serious damage. Visitor centre is good with facilities. Our campsite had basic toilets. Carry drinking water. Stay hydrated. Couple of days will do if you just want to Cathedral, Echidna Chasm and take scenic helicopter ride. If you are a serious bushwalker allow enough time for each walk and allocate sufficient days as this place is remote. Everything works here as per Kimberly time, meaning it will eventually happen but not in hurry.
Helicopter ride gives top view and walking around the domes on ground gives front view. Both are totally different. One view can not replace the other, so...
Read moreWhat a fantastic place - visually beautiful, and culturally very significant. Everything is very tasteful. The drive in is certainly something to watch out for - the first river crossing can be a challenge for those folk who are not confident 4WD'ers however the reward at the end of a long drive is some really spectacular scenery. The campsite is basic, however extremely functional with bore water, and drop toilets kept clean by the local ranger staff. I can get busy, but not as busy as the major locations.
This is a definite place for any 'bucket list' and one I'm supremely glad to have visited. Highly recommended, and if the chance comes up again - I'd go back in...
