To be honest, the site wasn't the easiest to find. I recommend looking for the Friendly Grocery sign, as there's a gate near it that takes you straight to the opal site. Otherwise you can park at the airport and walk through the scrub to get to the site. It's near the large rock circle, the opal fossicking patch is the white rock pile. Recommend you bring a hat, sun screen a bucket and plenty of water (for yourself and the bucket). The opals are easiest to see in the sun, if they're wet. Dip the rock into your water, then look under the sun. The rock pile isn't very large, but we still found heaps of opal during our visit.

Great fun, and you do find some colour here. There's nothing to say you have a fortune to make anything out of them, just a great talking piece, and you found some opal. Just make sure you take a spray water bottle with you to help look for colour

Free Opal fossicking, great for kids as no tools required, just search a pile of rubble for rocks with bits of Opal. Park at Quilpie airport and wander 2 minutes through the scrub until you come across the piles of rocks.

To be honest, the site wasn't the easiest to find. I recommend looking for the Friendly Grocery sign, as there's a gate near it that takes you straight to the opal site. Was there today 05 / 08 / 2023 , sooo disappointing, we came here specially for opal fossicking, went to the advertised fossicking area at the airport, spent hours going through a view meagre piles of stones for...
