I highly recommend booking the Battery tour with the train ride to understand the military’s history of the island fully. It started with how the train was established and run for the military’s use, and it moved to the gun platform, gun room, shell store, and hidden engine room. Most things were explained by the tour guide with a yellow shirt, and the underground tunnels were filled with lights suitable for us to explore. I was told the underground was built with limestone, the strongest limestone of that time, and it was even exported overseas to Western Australia. It is the same material as the Perth Mint’s building. The tour guide even explained that the gun could launch from Rottnest Island to Kings Park in Perth. Overall, the tour is super worthy if you are a history fan or anyone who wants to know more about Rottnest Island. Please be aware that the underground might not be suitable for certain people with narrowed tunnels, inclines, and dusky...
Read moreWhen me, my mum and little brother went to Rottnest Island, one of the things we did was go to the Oliver Hill Battery. We road on bikes that we rented to the bass of the hill where we parked our bikes and walked up the hill to the gun. While we waited for our tour to start I looked at the many World War II news clippings such as the Pearl Harbor Bombing. to what I learnt Fremantel was a in-portent harbor and Perth was under threat of a Japanese invasion and the gun was made to keep it safe. The gun is 3 stores. The bottom loaded shells while the top fired them. some of the tour was under ground and the stored shells their and had their dinning room there and many...
Read moreThis is a must see when visiting Rottnest Island. It’s a couple of kilometres from town by bike or there is a bus and train you can take to get there. This hill was deconstructed so the tunnels could be built and then rebuilt to house the Gun. A guide tour is definitely recommended as the guides are very knowledgeable and make the tour interesting and well worth the $20 for a family ticket. You will be in awe of the effort that went in to protecting the Port of Fremantle before and during WWII. If you are riding there is a pretty big hill to walk up to get to the top but it’s not to difficult. There are a few steps along the tunnels...
