It's a good beach no doubt but not one of the beat beaches in the world like the NYT says.  Not even the best beach on the north part of KI.  If you have limited time then I'd skip this beach.  Those aside it is a cool beach.  The walk through the caves was long and fun.  The beach itself is nice, but when you have so many great ones on KI it's a let down.  It would be hard to lug all your stuff from the parking lot to the beach and the rip tides are strong there. Its more of a beach to walk around not really swim and the water felt extra cold despite being about 28degC outside.  If you make the trip watch out for the way Google maps take you.  It will take you down a dirt road which is supposed to be faster but because we had just a sedan we had to drive pretty slow and it was much longer.  Took almost 25 mins more.  There is a way to get there fully on paved road so just find that...

When going to the beach becomes an adventure it sure is Stokes Bay!! A hidden gem in kangaroo island. We followed the arrow signs from the parking lot, you need to turn right .. then through the rocks you’ll enter and enclosed area which you should walk through to finally get to the beach. The beach is so clear, perfect to snorkel. There is an enclosed natural pool. We saw parents and kids in the natural pool.

There are warning signs for underwater currents that can pull from the side. There isn’t life guards in the beach so be careful when you are...

Beautiful beach when you find it after walking through the rocky headland. Loved the small surf and stayed in the warm water (chilly at first, as always) for about 40 minutes. There was no rip or undertow of any kind. Perhaps in a large surf a rip is a problem by the rocks, but neither of the times we went was the surf dangerous at all. It was clear turquoise water. In the carpark there is a cafe which sells meals and coffee and delicious Golden North (Australian owned and made) ice-creams - we had honey and iced...
