The Steppes Stones are monuments dedicated to those who share in the love and care of the Central Highlands of Tasmania. They are located about 30 minutes north of Bothwell on the Lakes highway (Highland Lakes rd) near the Interlaken turnoff.
They were one of those things you find, are delighted by them, and wonder why they are here on a lonely mountain highway.
The artist, Stephen Walker AM, was introduced to the area by a friend. He grew to love it so much that he designed and gifted these artworks to the community.
All the pieces encapsulate natural things that are endemic to the area and include historical events synonymous with the Lake country.
The sculptures are near the Steppes homestead. You can walk to the homestead from the sculptures or you can drive.
‘The Steppes is part of both an Historic Site and Conservation Area managed by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service in partnership with the Mountain Huts Preservation Society, Wildcare group Friends of the Steppes, Central Highlands Council and the community.’

Bronze sculptures on a circle of stone blocks - not what you might expect in an isolated patch of bush in Tasmania’s highlands. But there they are, with a historic homestead nearby. Both make for an interesting and probably unexpected stop for travellers on the high road across central Tasmania. It's easy to drive past and barely notice the plain wooden sign saying "Steppes Sculptures". With just a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it gravel track disappearing into the bush, there is little to draw in passers by. On earlier trips I had driven past, but eventually...

It's a sort of henge type of thing with each rock in the circle having a sculpture of some native wildlife. There's a descriptive plate explaining each of the sculptures and their context. Apparently the sculptures were created and donated by a local artist (Steven Walker?). They're quite nice and the wombat in the centre of the circle sets the whole thing off nicely. Although we missed it, there's a track from the sculptures leading off to an old homestead with out buildings and a bakery. Take a few minutes to stop and relax in a...
