Excellent walk, views and a many historical stories that add interest to the day. Start at Swan View and walk to the John Forrest National Park.
It is amazing how this train line came about and it's popularity. There are story boards along the way and a duplicated railway bridge near to the end. For those hiker enthusiasts, there's an additional couple of loop walks of more difficult challenge that provide incredible views.
It's uphill (most) of the way but any 60 y o can manage, and downhill coming home. Although we walked each way- push bikes are commonly seen along the way. Take a torch for the tunnel section. If that isn't appealing, you can walk a parallel pathway to skip the tunnel.
Be early as the car parks at both ends fill up quickly. Take your own food and drink as the kiosk and bar at John Forrest is...
Read moreI've run here in both winter and summer, distances of 10-30km; up and back. I found it great for my trail running preparation (as a beginner) because the trail is nice and wide with minor but constant incline on the way out and decline on the way back (starting at Swan View Heritage Trail - 100 Swan View Rd, Swan View). It is popular, so plenty of people around if your legs turn to jelly and you need an emergency piggy back! I found it particularly beautiful in Winter, passing through/past Hovea falls and watching the stream flow. The falls are about 4.5km from the start point. Although the tracks are wide, be mindful that you share them with cyclist so be careful, especially if...
Read moreAmazing afternoon, we parked at the Pechey Rd, Swanview entrance because the tunnel is 500m up the trail compared to several km's from the set car park entrance as recommended by Google Maps. The water fall is best after good rain, very dry in Summer. The pathway to the tunnel is very accessible for wheelchairs, bikes and prams. Take sun protection as it is very open and we saw no toilets in the first 3km's. The tunnel is easy to navigate but fabric shoes could end up pretty soggy sometimes and the loose gravel is hard for some wheels to push through within the tunnel it's self. Bring a torch if you don't have one...
