Located across the Port Arthur harbour of Mason Cove, is Point Puer. In 1834 a boy's prison was built here to separate boys aged eighteen and under from older prisoners. Some 3000 misguided and neglected children, the youngest who had just turned 9, were transported from England to this reformatory. A 14 year-old who stole a hat was sentenced for life and transported to this miserable place.
