Absolutely worth the extra effort to reach the summit! Superb 360 views, if you get a clear day. The summit climb is a steady scramble over large jumbled boulders. Poles inserted into boulders every 10m or so, show the general path to the top. Also you will notice the stone surfaces worn smoother where people have gone before. The trail is not super difficult, BUT it does require reasonable normal fitness and good concentration. Since the boulders are jumbled, there are large crevices, gaps and surfaces going on all angles. Slipping into one of these, and twisting or breaking a ankle/leg is the bigger danger, more so than falling off a cliff or anything like that. Climb carefully & patiently, and you you won't be stretchered out.
Being a taller person is an advantage, particularly in a couple places where you almost climb up vertically. When you first think you reach the top, you actually climb down a section then back up to the summit.
The day we climbed, we left the dove lake carpark around 8am. Walked up via Marion's lookout and we're at the summit before lunch. From the Summit track start to the top, was 53mins, with couple short stops. It was our first time. Being early in morning & clear day made it great day. Climbing in wet or strong winds would get...
Read moreWe were absolutely blown away by our experience climbing and reaching the sumit of Cradle Mountain Walk to the start of the summit section is easy to do and majority of people can get to this poi t, the summit section I would be recommend experiemced/fit people and not afraid to literally climb this section; can be quite difficult and daunting at sections The tracks are extremely well maintained and the whole park on all the walks we did had views and stunning scenary There is a toilet located at the start of the summit section if needed, but you need to bring your own toilet paper Gets windy and cold at the top so on a bright sunny day pack warm layers as well The shuttle driver advised us that there is only 50-60 days a year where you can summit and see the whole landscape as its either too windy or wet to climb, or when you get to the top its within cloud Recommendations - be fit and nor scared of heights Leave early as the overland track to the summit and back down takes between 4-8hrs depending on fitness levels Be prepared for all weather Have good shoes Bring your own toilet paper!
Ps. You get to the top, but its actually a fake summit you have to go down slightly and then back up again to the the actual summit with...
Read moreI have been before back in 2018 unfortunately we weren't permitted to do the Cradle Mountain Summit due to the cold weather conditions. This time round, the weather was on our side. The park has significantly upgraded with a visitor centre and numerous shuttle buses to preserve the roads around the park. It's no wonder as it is a huge tourist attraction. Despite the Hustle and bustle, the trail to Cradle Mountain Summit is worth it. You get to see Mount Osso (tallest mountain in Tasmania) and as you approach Cradle Mountain, you know you have to climb up rocks. If you have a fear of heights, this will test you but take your time going up as you will be rewarded with an amazing view. Overall, a fun and exhilarating hike/climb for those that are...
