Great piece of History being built around 1845 . This bridge in now an attraction due to its unusual design and beautiful local stone construction . The bridge has small arched flow way that a small creek flows through on wet season . The bridge use to be the only connection for Swansea and Little Swanport snd was convict built . Even by today’s stand it’s well built and it’s slate rock type construction is desirable in many modern homes . I believe it’s a worthy stop and a good piece of east coast Tasmania history. The Spiky Bridge is a unique stop being that you get best of both worlds because across the road at is Spiky Beach with providing a panoramic headland view and a clean swimmable beach with rock pools to explore on the...

We stopped here as part of a drive from Triabunna to Swansea. Definitely worth stopping of you are passing by as it is part of Tasmania's history. It was convict built in the 1840s and still stands as a testament to their hard work.

No one knows why there are spikes. Was it a structural reason (strengthening the lime mortar capping), did they prevent livestock going over the edge, or were they just a folly? I also imagine they could be to make the bridge walls look higher than they are, which would have saved labour and materials. I guess we’ll never know.

It’s literally the coolest bridge we have seen and there is an amazing plaque here explaining when and how it was built, excellent bit of history! You can drive on the spiky bridge and go out the other side but would be best if you had a 4WD to do so, we couldn’t take our caravan across but we could park our 26ft caravan in the parking area just fine- just had to reverse out!
