Langford House at Walcha is an extraordinary piece of Australian history which appears to be slowly and sadly "dying". Although a couple of rooms are magnificent, an air of shabby decay permeates the whole building. Constructed from locally made brick in 1903/4, the house is exquisite: leadlight windows, grand spaces, wrought iron, spectacular staircases, wonderful old Australian red cedar. The owner provides a delightful, genteel almost somnambulistic tour full of interesting anecdotes. But dear oh dear! It could be so much more! And for $60, it's a rather pricey amble round a decaying, formerly majestic mansion. I didn't begrudge the money spent cos it's but a drop in the bucket of the funds needed to keep Langford from gently crumbling into the ground. Go and see it while it's still there. And Walcha? Lovely, friendly town...

The newer part is so-so, but still impressive. The owner is quite eccentric, but has managed to keep the house alive. Not many could... Worth a tour because who knows what will happen in...
