Philosopher Falls is 10 km out of Waratah, Tasmania. Start of track is at the clockwise end of the carpark. Look for bollard with hiker symbol on it. The walk to the falls is magical with all the moss and fern laden trees and rocks. Part of the walk follows a historic mining water race, with the last part of the walk going down some 200 steps to reach the viewing platform. Yep, you’ve got to go back up the stairs to walk back. It's worth it though. The falls are stunning and are surrounded by the beautiful Tarkine rainforest. Philosopher Falls is named after James “Philosopher” Smith, the man who changed the fortunes of Tasmania through his discovery of tin at Mt Bischoff, near Waratah. Absolutely loved this walk. We went for the fungi and it was definitely worth the visit. The walk to the actual water falls only takes 40mins but if you are there for the fungi it will mostly likely take 2hours due to stopping every 5secs for a fungi photo! Haha! The only caution I want to share about this track is how slippery some areas get especially the steps on the way down to the falls and also that in winter to go in the mornings, we went in the afternoon and you could feel the track getting dark, in the end we had to move fast to get out before we lost light. Also if you’re there for photography, the lighting is so tricky especially for microscopic fungi.

Stunning walk through rainforest with alot of myrtle trees. It was fairly easy walk taking under 1.5hrs return. Had to climb steps down to the pretty falls that can be slippery after the rain. The track that continues on past the falls along the old water trench is a bit overgrown and not really worth going on as we couldn't see any views so turned around
