We had been to the former Quoin Hill Winery here on several occasions, always pleasant and welcoming..... but the new wining/dining venue here - Wayward Winery- is simply brilliant!!
Just an easy drive from Ballarat, Wayward Winery is set to be a hit on the local fine food/wine scene.
Venue building has been designed with taste and an eye to capturing the great views from the full-length windows. Our spot near the wood fire on a cool day was a plus. In warmer weather the spacious balcony and covered rotunda areas will certainly be pleasant and popular places to send and hour or two.
After impressing when we made a phone booking, in-person front of house, Lain, turned out to be charming, friendly, knowledgeable and efficient staff member.
Ordering from a very comprehensive and slightly off-beat menu resulted in some outstanding and interesting dishes from the kitchen. No worries about the freshness of the vegetables - they come from the eight or ten new garden new just out the side.
Wine prices by the glass (for quality wines) were OK, but the bottle prices were a little steep.
When the word gets out about this recently-opened spot, it is sure to be on the must-visit list for many locals and visitors. Overseas visitors would go nuts about the scenery with its rolling hills, flocks of sheep and lambs, and even a few wind turbines for good measure.
Again... brilliant!!

Read moreExcellent overall experience. The well organised waitress kindly moved us closer to the impressive view. Service throughout was very good. The grazing plate was a tasty combination of meats, cheeses and a super impressive foccacia. The pickled chilli was sensational. My lamb medallion was very yummy very tender and had a sweet piquant sauce. The wattle seed chicken was beautifully cooked: moist, tender and tasty. The duck, difficult to do perfectly, was exactly right. BRAVO! The sides were equally impressive: Our asparagus was tasty with a lovely crunch, the hand cut chips with confit garlic aoli super and you have to get the peas with Warragul greens! We waddled off after some delicious sesame icecream. Highly recommended. The wine complemented the food perfectly. I really enjoyed my fume blanc. Right up there (btw) with Tassies best eateries. Do yourself a...
Read moreWhat is it about ‘second time visits’? We had loved our first visit here 12 months ago. This time was rather disappointing. I’d booked over a month ago and could only get a booking for 1:15pm. But there were so many tables available on our arrival and only two other diners, I’m still scratching my head. It therefore lacked atmosphere as we were the only ones sitting there for most of the time. Some items on the menu were not available so we decided to have the pizza and a couple of small starters. Prosciutto was very salty and stringy with an over abundance of buratta, and the nectarines barely discernible in taste. They kindly offered us a mango mousse on the house as it was the last dessert sitting in the fridge before they closed up for the weekend. Probably won’t...
