Perry Sandhills was our must see destination because we had promised our kid a chance to run up and down sandhills. And it certainly delivered. Just 15 minutes outside Wentworth, the sandhills are the size of a small town, easy to walk around and discover most things, but it feels like another place altogether.

The fine red sand and desert landscape make this a stunning place. A number of films have been shot here, and you can see why when you're there. But it also feels ancient and peaceful. I could imagine nomadic Aboriginal people stopping here, having fires, talking and resting for days before they returned home supplied with all the desert melons they could carry.

We wandered the dunes, passing an exorbitant number of desert melons which had obviously been cultivated in the long past but now were an abundant treasure trove of bush tucker. Old trees littered the landscape, including one that looked like a whale.

In the middle of the Sandhills, is the incredible "God Tree", a giant eucalyptus tree that is over 200 years old. The perfect place to sit under, eating melons and telling stories. This place feels like a Cathedral. The God Tree stands among the dunes offering shade and rest. I felt like I didn't want to leave when I was there, feeling connected to my own dreamtime.

Our son experienced his dream of running up and down sandhills, and my partner joined him. I snapped them and wandered about looking for the small trails of the desert....

I passed through Wentworth recently, after a trip to Mildura to visit some old Italian business associates, when I had a sudden craving for giant, unexplained hills of sand jutting out of a completely flat landscape. You can imagine my delight when I saw a sign for the Perry Sandhills located only 6kns away! These hills are exactly as advertised. They are hills and they are most definitely made of sand. I attempted to climb some of the hills, but I thought better of it after several excruciatingly difficult steps, each of which reminding me of why I chose not to live in the desert. If you decide to visit the sandhills, please be prepared to take a cup of sand per shoe back to your car. Also, that each grain of sand is represented by at least 14 flies. They love people. In closing, if you like hills, love sand, and can't get enough flies in your life, then you should visit the...

Wonderful, ancient place. The kids love it and the adults love watching the kids have all the fun because “fun” implies trudging up sand dunes and raising cardio levels above resting-rates, which is something that doesn’t often happen for us and we wonder if we’re having a heart attack or really ARE this unfit. Then we start thinking about where all that time could have possibly gone since we used to run and jump and play with no signs of stopping and how far we have fallen from grace and WHERE DID ALL THESE WRINKLES COME FROM? I WAS ONLY...

The sand dunes are very close to Wentworth and accessible by road, the atmosphere and the scenery are beautiful, I recommend going there at sunset because of the heat of the afternoon and because the sunset looks great. You can take surfboards or some cardboard to play sliding. There is very little light pollution so it is a very good place if you like to take pictures at night.

Awesome spot to take the kids to explore the dunes and slide down. Take a picnic and make a day of it! I recommend smooth plastic toboggans, corflute sheets or smooth bottomed boogy boards. I also recommend taking water to wash out kids eyes, as the more adventurous kids will no doubt end up with a face full of sand!
