If you follow your nose driving from Brisbane Yarraman is about 3 or 4 hours away going in a northwesterly direction. The country town is one of those places that are off the beaten track as far as tourists' locations go. But despite that isolation its picturesque rural and mountain views give the Yarraman Heritage Centre much loved charm. This rambling old mansion that is in the process of being restored was used by the catholic church as an orphanage for children about 2 hundred years ago and when I was there I still could hear the pitter patter of their feet from the upstairs rooms. There's a lot of things here, of varying interest and depth, but easy enough to spend as much or as little time as you want in whichever section. Exhibits were quite enlightening on the post-colonial history of the area (even if it was a bit depressing that it seems to have mostly consisted of felling trees, raising cows, and sending boys off to war).
Would have been nice to have more on the indigenous history of the region instead of just a tiny token...
