THE HÜHNERBERG A gallows which became a lookout post n the Middle Ages, the Hühnerberg, which is also known as Richtberg, was once home to a brick gal- lows which was the highest place of execution in the region. According to the legend, Franz von Haag, the Bohemian rebel and leader of a band of robbers, was hanged there in 1466. Some time around 1463, togeth- er with about 400 men, the robber chief is reputed to have conquered Rauheneck Castle and Weikersdorf Castle to extort his pay, which Emperor Frederick Ill had failed to give him. The gallows was hardly ever used, as it was locat- ed too far outside the city. In its place, a benefactress of the town of Baden, Theresia Göschl, had a lookout built, from which visitors enjoy extensive views of the country beyond the pine forest - today's Theresien- warte viewpoint.
