Burgruine Landsee — Attraction in Gemeinde Markt Sankt Martin

This is a ruined castle in a scenic area of Burgenland. There is little information we could find before we went and nearly gave it a miss, but were glad we didn't. The ruins are open daily in the summer, and for a small charge you have the run of the place. You find that in this area of Austria there are a number of viewing towers, usually recently erected to take in a panoramic view, here the main tower of the castle has had a modern staircase added to take you to a magnificent viewing platform at the castles highest point. On a clear day its well worth the climb. The ruins are very photogenic and although there is no English guide book there are information boards in the castle in German, Hungarian and English. There was some light refreshments available from the ticket office and nicely kept toilets in the castle itself. Die Anlage ist ungefähr 300 × 200 m groß und lässt auch als Ruine noch deutlich erkennen, dass die Burg aus vier Befestigungsringen bestand, deren erste durch zwei Gräben getrennt waren. Der äußerste Mauerring, der nur schlecht erhalten ist, ist der jüngste. Am ersten, einfach gebauten Tor befindet sich die Jahreszahl 1668. Das zweite, bereits stark befestigte Tor wird durch eine Holzbrücke über den ersten Graben erreicht. Dahinter führt der Haupteingangsweg über eine weitere Holzbrücke über den zweiten Graben zum dritten Tor. Hinter diesem Tor liegt der große Außenhof. Von dort führt südlich das vierte Tor in einen schmalen Innenhof, das fünfte (eingestürzte) Tor führt zu einem weiteren Hof, an den östlich die bis auf die Grundmauern verfallenen Wohntrakte anschließen. Von dort wird über eine Treppe durch das sechste Tor das Zentralgebäude erreicht, in dem noch die Lage der Küche erkennbar ist. Die Mauern des Wohnturmes sind bis zu zehn Meter dick. An ihn sind mehrere Türme angebaut, in einem befand sich die Kapelle. In ihm führt eine neue Treppenanlage in den ehemaligen Dachbereich des Turms (mit allein stehendem, gemauerten Bogen), von dem eine weite Fernsicht möglich ist. Die erste Kapelle der Burg befand sich im Kapellenturm, der zum zentralen Teil der bestehenden Ruine gehört. Dieser Turm wurde zwischen 1460 und 1485 erbaut. Die Burg hatte auch einen eigenen Friedhof („Schlossfriedhof“ an der Zufahrtsstraße zur Ruine), in welchem sich die erste Pfarrkirche des Ortes Landsee befand. This is surprising how big this ruin is. Even though it is a ruin, the condition of the buildings is quite good feel the atmosphere of the fort. There is a convivient starcase to the top of the ruin. View from there is awesome and the whole place is totally safe. Also recommended for families with small children, we were there with our 4 years old son.
