Heidentor — Attraction in Gemeinde Petronell-Carnuntum

It's such a "typical" place where history mixes with furiously flickering wind turbines :) A wonderful place with a strong ancient atmosphere. Free to park and walk around.

The Heidentor is located about 900 metres south of the civil town of Carnuntum. It is still uncertain whether the Heidentor was part of the ancient settlement. It is also unclear whether the monument was built at a crossroads like other similar structures. However, individual roads were built in the immediate vicinity of the Heidentor. The remains of temporary Roman military camps near the monument have been identified using geophysical methods. These rented camps were fortified by a V-shaped ditch with packed earth behind it and piles forming a rampart. However, further archaeological excavations are needed to establish the chronology. Heidentor představuje pozůstatek monumentální stavby typu quadrifrons, tedy čtyřbokého vítězného oblouku se dvěma průchody postaveného na čtyřech masivních pilířích. Uprostřed se nacházel mohutný podstavec vysoký asi 4,3 metru na kterém původně pravděpodobně stála jezdecká socha císaře viditelná ze všech stran. Tento typ stavby sloužil jako památník vítězství a císařské moci.

Stavba dosahovala výšky až 14,5 metru a měla čtvercový půdorys. Základ tvořilo jádro z římské lité malty a drobného kamene, obestavěné velkoformátovými kvádry a cihlovým zdivem. Dochované pilíře ukazují znaky restaurátorských zásahů z počátku 20. století.

Nad oblouky se nacházela vodorovná římsa, přecházející do atiky – architektonického pásma lemovaného malými sloupy na mramorových konzolách, často zdobenými mramorovými soškami. Ve střední části atiky byl pravděpodobně umístěn nápis, jehož znění se nedochovalo.

Zajímavostí je, že při výstavbě byly použity i spólie, tedy druhotně využitý stavební materiál – například části starších římských staveb a oltářů. To svědčí o úsporném přístupu k výstavbě, běžném ve 4. století.

Heidentor tak není jen torzem starověké architektury, ale výmluvným svědectvím římské monumentality, propagandy a zároveň i pozdně antické skromnosti ve...
