Fossilienwelt Weinviertel — Attraction in Gemeinde Stetten

I visited this museum on a field trip with my son's class. I feel I did not receive the full experience, which is why I cannot rate a 5 star, however when we return to visit the museum on a private tour as a family, I am sure that will garner a 5 star rating.

During our class field trip, however, we really enjoyed the time the staff put into assisting our group with the activities. Although the staff were not all native English speakers, and some did not speak English at all, they still managed to accommodate us well and make the field trip a great success and very memorable for the children.

The best part, of course, was the sand pit where the children (and adults!) could dig for fossils! They absolutely adored this area and would have loved to have spent all day there if they could have. Many were overjoyed each time they found a manta or shark tooth, a pearl, a bone fragment or piece of a volcanic rock. A great way to spend a half hours time!

They also really enjoyed the Spielplatz, naturally, but also were avid listeners on the group lecture about how the earth was formed. A wonderful experience led by a great guide, a biologist who works at the museum. Bravo!

All in all, Fossilienwelt is a wonderful place which I would definitely recommend to friends and would go back for a visit ourselves to get the...

The museum and fossil exhibit are fascinating but you go through it fairly quickly - perhaps €14 is a little overpriced. If you have a NO card and get it for free, it's certainly worth it. For the additional area, you pay €7 for the park + water play area, or €10 for these things + sand pit excavation area access. Our eldest child loved the sand area. Both kids enjoyed the water area and walk around the park, where there are more play facilities, including a huge slide. Unfortunately, the big downside was the catering. There is one food truck to serve multiple families arriving simultaneously with kids - one person quickly takes the payment, while only one person prepares the food. Despite her best efforts, this person was overwhelmed and the wait for food was too long. My tip: eat before you go and avoid...

Anreise: Die Perlen- und Fossilienwelt liegt sehr verkehrsgünstig und ist von der Wiener Stadtgrenze in wenigen Autominuten über die Autobahn (A22 bzw. S1) zu erreichen. Nach der Autobahnabfahrt sind es nur wenige hundert Meter zum Gelände.Vor Ort ist ein ausreichend großer Parkplatz vorhanden.

Im Eingangsbereich befinden sich Shop mit Treffpunkt zur Führung sowie die Cafeteria mit Sonnenterrasse. Man kommt in weiterer Folge zum Spielplatz (lt. Homepage ein "großer Abenteuerspielplatz"...man sollte sich jedoch nicht zu viel erwarten: eine längere gelbe Rutsche, welche jedoch laut aufgehängtem Zettel abfärben kann, eine kurze breite, eine Schaukel sowie eine Seilbahn). Die Wege sind rollstuhl- und kinderwagengerecht, wobei man doch eine gewisse Steigung in Kauf nehmen muss. Angeleinte Hunde dürfen in das Gelände mitgenommen werden.

Eintritt: Wir nutzten das Angebot der NÖ-Card, wo ein einmaliger Eintritt mit Führung inkludiert ist. Der reguläre Preis für einen Erwachsenen inkl. Führung in den Teiritzberg und zum Austernriff beträgt € 9,50 (Stand 10/2016).

Bei der Führung selbst erfährt man viel über die Entstehung der Erde und wie es zur Bildung des Austernriffs in Stetten gekommen ist. Veranschaulicht wird das Ganze auch über eine "Zeitleiste" an welcher man entlang geht. Beim Gang durch den Teiritzberg wird durch die verschiedenen Schichten und Ablagerungen erklärt, welche Meeresbewohner damals hier gelebt haben. Nach einem kurzen Film gelangt man in eine Halle, in welcher sich das freigelegte, riesige Austernriff befindet. Dazu erlebt man noch eine Multimediashow, die vor allem den Kinder gefallen hat.

Die Möglichkeit, in der künstlich angelegten Sandbucht nach Haifischzähnen udgl. zu schürfen, haben wir ob der Witterungsverhältnisse nicht angenommen. Dieser Teil würde dazu noch extra kosten (Erw. € 6,--, Kinder € 4,-- je 1/2h) und ist in der NÖ-Card nicht enthalten.

Fazit: Im Großen und Ganzen war der Besuch für uns sehr interessant und lehrreich, wenngleich der große Aha-Effekt doch ausgeblieben ist.
