We took the strenuous Naturfreundesteig route to Traunsteinhaus and stayed there for two nights. The view from the outdoor patio offers a spectacular view of Traunsee. We ordered the half board for one night/day, and ordered a la carte dinner + breakfast the next day. Breakfast is a simple buffet of coffee/tea, deli meats, cheese, bread, and a few spreads.
Rooms are cozy and spacious, with double bed bunks. Each bunk level even has a window that you can open to get some air circulation.
We ended up getting back quite late on the second night of our stay (we were the only ones in the hut!). The owners were absolutely lovely and prepared us warm tea, beverages, and their homemade Dal Bhat for dinner. Their hospitality made our stay truly wonderful.
Tips: Obviously, dont forget to bring a sleeping bag liner. There are no showers, so bring a small hand towel to wipe yourself down in the bathroom. There is an outlet in each of the rooms to charge your phone. There is good cell reception at the hut. A sweet Nepalese couple (Dev man and his wife) work at the hut during the summer season, and they serve Dal Bhat - lentil soup with pumpkin curry, and rice with a side of pickle and chilies. Can't recommend this dish enough!! Catch the sunrise and sunset from the outside patio. There's also a cool rocking bench to chill on.
Recommendations: Trek up to the neighboring Gmundner hütte, which is at a slightly higher elevation, to see Traunsteinhaus with the backdrop of the mountains. Stangenkogel (1661m) and Traunstein (1691m) are both within 30min from...
Read moreGreat cottage for all the hikers that need some food and beer on their hike. Me and my friends visited the place to have our lunch there so we went for the restaurant only and didn't use an option of accommodation at the cottage. The meals at the place are great and the staff spoke a bit of English, which was convenient for my friends that don't speak German. Even better thing are the pictures of the meals hanging on the wall. They help to create the picture of what to expect and again, help anyone who doesn't speak the language with their order. Thumb up for someone who thinks here! The ordering is always at the counter, but the food will be brought to you to your table. It seems that there used to be an option to access menu and/or maybe order using QR code available at each table outside. At the time when we visited the place this option was not available anymore, since the links were not working. In any case, this seems to me to be...
Read moreI had the worst experience here in my entire life in 2017/2018 that I still think about today. The manager in charge (who had been drinking) was so rude to me and my guests, as well as a couple of other families the entire night. It was a nightmare. Nobody said anything as he continued to carry on asking us questions and then sneering at us and criticising where we came from. He then "offered" everyone a round of schnapps and then charged us all for the drinks when we left. I had a food allergy and did not order the dinner but brought my own food, and was sneered at with a "oh you don't want our food?". It was the absolute worst experience I have ever had at any "guest" house, and one of the worst human interactions of my life.
My group and I met up with another group who descended the next morning with us and they told us they were also shocked, and it was completely...
