Plainburg — Attraction in Großgmain

It looks like a neat place and I was excited to see it during my day trip from The Eagle's Nest to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, but visitors beware.. it's not always open as the sign suggests. I have a fun photo of myself at about 3pm today trying to enter a locked gate while staring perplexed at the "open daily from 9am to 7pm" sign that was affixed to the gate. A beautiful, paved hike, all the way from Bad Reichenhall. It’s closed 10 of November for the season. Even with a light snow for the last four days, there was quite a bit piled on the bridge to the castle door. You can hike up to the castle door, but it is locked. Bereits um 1140 wird die Plainburg erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Hoch oben auf 640 m Seehöhe gelegen ist sie schon von Weitem sichtbar und überblickt das Gmainertal. Die Plainburg diente vor allem als Verteidigungsplatz der Salzhandelswege zwischen Bad Reichenhall und Salzburg und zählt zu einer den ältesten Burgruinen Österreichs. 1796 verließ der letzte Soldat die Festung und wurde dadurch der Verfall eingeleitet. In den 70er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts wurde mit Instandsetzungs- und Renovierungsarbeiten begonnen und die Anlage für Besucher begehbar gemacht. Heute sind von der einst stattlichen Anlage noch die über fünf Meter hohen und durchschnittlich etwa 1,45 Meter dicken Außenmauern, der Innenhof und der Eingangsbereich mit Torhaus erhalten.
