Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe — Attraction in Heiligenblut am Großglockner

Drove here from Salzburg on a Saturday morning, it wasn't too busy. The drive was beautiful and magnificent all the way, with many places to stop off and take a photos. There were a lot of cyclists along the route which was nerve racking, having to be careful of them on the steep slopes going up, trying to overtake when the traffic on the opposite lane is speeding down hill.... hats off to them though for going up such steep inclines.

We arrived and there was plenty of free parking which is rare in Austria. View of the mountains and glacier really breathtaking, sad to see that the Glacier is melting.

There is a museum, restaurants, gift shop and cable car down the mountain side into the valley for treks. There are also treks up hill to a separate observatory/viewing platform on a hill where you can see mountain goats (I forgot what the proper name for them is). We also got to see Marmots in the valley.

Make sure you seek out the big 3789m sign in front of the multi-story car park and press the big red button (see photos below to see what I mean) to take a complimentary souvenir photo which you can download from the GrossGlockner website - check out the "photo point" section.

If you are short of time and wondering whether to come here or not, I'd say if you have been up other mountains in the Alps, or you have seen the mountains in Iceland then you can probably skip it, otherwise its definitely...

We stopped on panoramic Kaiser Franz-Joseph terrace for only 10minutes, cause we proceeded straight to Gamsgrubenweg. On the parking lot under Swarrowski terrace quite few chargers for electric cars (and bikes even maybe)-charging is free. Grubenweg is a nice and lite trakinng under "tallest Austrian" and overlooking Pastirze glacier. Saw quite a few marmots and capricorns (Alpine ibex), also Apollo butterfly and one eagel cruising high above. The flora is amaizing-so many mountain flowers of carius colors. After Gamsgrubenweg ended, we hikled to the glacier morena, sadly finding out it is melting fast:( No wonder it was quite a warm day yesterday August 14th. We made it under the hutte (Oberwald? in 2950m) and than just sat down by the mini lake in the tranquility of the nature. Words cannot describe the beauty of Grossglockner surroundings, it was so serene. Clear blue sky certainly improved the experience. Not crowded at all. Entry fee...

Devo avvertire chi legge che la mia esperienza al cospetto della Cima Grossglockner e al ghiacciaio Pasterze si è realizzata dopo una certa preparazione e un minimo di programmazione quindi studiate sul sito: innanzitutto la visita avviene da giugno a ottobre, cioè quando viene sgomberata dalla neve la strada panoramica che porta qui ( e dopo un bivio al passo che conduce dalla Carinzia al Salisburghese ). Il lavoro di manutenzione della strada è difficile, lungo e impegnativo, per cui il transito globale è a pagamento ( auto di 4 metri 45 euro ) e credo potrebbe avvenire altrimenti solo in luglio e agosto, ma con varie problematiche, se non ci fosse quello che chiamano “ business del turismo “ che aiuta e ha spinto alla manutenzione stagionale. Giungere sotto il Grossglockner porta a riflessioni simili a quelle che tutti fanno ( in malafede ) riguardo all’alta montagna, che sia italiana, francese, svizzera o austriaca: dovrebbe essere inviolata e inviolabile! Tranne che dai novelli Messner, Bonatti ecc… Nel caso del Grossglockner e ghiacciaio Pasterze, un mega parcheggio multipiano con annesso piccolo museo dell’automobile e un megastore che vende tonnellate di merchandising dedicato al luogo in realtà farebbero ridere e/o inorridire se non fossero realizzati, secondo me, col minimo impatto ambientale usando vetro che riflette ghiaccio e cielo , pannelli solari in esso integrati e altri accorgimenti. Le casette più o meno in stile baita sono storici punti di ristoro restaurati. E sono lì dal 1800. L’unica cosa che potevano risparmiarsi è il “cristallo Swarovski”, ovviamente pubblicitario, ma anche costruito con all’interno diorami illustrativi di flora e fauna locale, progetti di salvaguardia ambientale e … l’immancabile shop center. A me interessava il panorama e la natura: non so scalare una montagna ma in montagna e tra i ghiacci mi “avvicino a Dio”. Fantastico l’arco di cime che alimentano il ghiacciaio Pasterze, il ghiacciaio stesso e tutti i fenomeni glaciali ad esso connessi. Una lezione di glaciologia come quelle che ho avuto alla Mer de Glace; al Monte Rosa versante svizzero; attraversando il Glacier di Geant sul Monte Bianco; alla Jungfrau, all’Aletsh e via dicendo. Ho avuto molto: Interessantissima la storia del ghiacciaio nei pannelli illustrativi e dei fenomeni ad essa correlati: avanzamenti e ritiri nel tempo, erosione e modellamento, laghi glaciali. Ere glaciali. Sono fissata, sono naturalista, verissimo. Una nota di colore al Grossglockner: simpaticissima la colonia di marmotte che vive nei pressi delle attività umane ma a debita distanza: si fanno fotografare rosicchiando carote...
