Schloss Kammer — Attraction in Maishofen

August 2023. My first impressions of this restaurant were really good, the food was great quality and the service was efficient. But at the end of the meal everything quickly changed when I queried an amount on the bill. A couple of items had been over-charged from the menu price, but instead of a quick apology and change to the bill, the waiter suddenly got angry and produced an Austrian version of the menu (as we had helpfully been given English translated ones). He announced that these were the prices that must now be paid! As I started questioning this his colleagues came over to support him and even tried to deny the existence of the lower prices in the English menu I had been given. Then with my credit card in my hand the waiter suddenly pushed his machine towards it, in the hope that a contactless payment would be taken. I could not believe this attitude and when this failed he started to loudly say ‘you don’t want to pay, we call the police’. I have never been so insulted in a restaurant in all my life and with my 2 young children witnessing this behaviour I then decided to just pay and walk out. As started to drive my car away one more sympathetic waitress, who seemed to finally get it, came out offering me some cash through my car window. But as she did this I glanced behind her to see another angry man at the restaurant door being PHYSICALLY restrained from what I can only assume was an attempt to come out and snatch the money straight back, or worse! I drove away absolutely disgusted, never to return to such a rude establishment again. Walking the mountains was our main goal for a summer fortnight in Austria. All hotels we had were booked in advance by an agency, we had seven different hotels in the area. This was the nicest/best one of the trip, we started and ended our walking trip here. It's nice, cosy, friendly, huge rooms perfect large bathrooms, great garden to eat in and they served nice and good diners. Just great.||Located just outside the village, overlooking the valley. There is a beautifull swimming pond behind the hotel, the staff is friendly and trying and the cook(s) really cook. . Excellent would have been my rating but my wife just remembered me of a point which I consider trully relevant: breakfast was basically OK but: the hotel has cows as neighbours in the meadows surrounding the hotel, maybe these neighbours were the origin of the high number of flies in the breakfast room. We normally can live with that but all the fresh food was displayed openly, lying uncovered uncooled on large plates. Not so nice to eat food which has been tasted first by a hunderd or so flies. Taking meat, chees, fruit etc started with waving the swarms away. My wife and doughter only dared to eat bread (very nice bread by the way) and wrapped things such as boiled eggs. Urig, gemütlich, sehr familiär und taditionell, grandioser Blick vom Biergarten aufs Kitzsteinhorn.

Die Zimmer waren sauber und groß, unsere "Suite" leider schon arg abgewohnt (besonders das Bad und die Toilette).

Das angestellte Personal (sowohl Kellner als auch Putzfrau) sind extrem aufmerksam, gründlich und zuvorkommend.

Das Frühstück war gut, Kaffee, Tee oder andere Getränke werden fleißig nachgefüllt, jeden Morgen gabs ein nach Wunsch frisch zubereitetes Frühstücksei...ein bunteres Brötchenangebot (halbe Stunde nach Frühstücksbeginn gabs nur noch luftige helle Brötchen oder Mischbrotschnitten) wäre schön.

Das Abendbrot in der Halbpension war stets ein reichliches 3-Gänge-Menue mit regional-authentischen Speisen. Man wählt aus zwei Gerichten als Hauptgang und für uns war immer etwas leckeres dabei. Vom Abendbrot rollten wir stets gut gefüllt aufs Zimmer.

Einen Saunabesuch sollte man rechtzeitig ankündigen, damit die Schwitzkammern ausreichend warm sind. Kommt man zu spät oder kündigt es nicht an, sitzt man im Kalten. Außergewöhnlich gemütlich ist der Ruheraum mit Strohbetten. Die Aufgussanlage in der Dampfsauna ist wirklich originell. Handtücher und Bademantel liegen bereit. Die Hauptschwitzkammer ist mit Fliesen ausgelegt, auf denen man sich ohne Schuhe die Füße verbrennt. Der Griff des Holzeimers zum Aufgießen war gebrochen, der Holzlöfel tropfte aus vielen Rissen, Aufgussöl musste man lange suchen. Schade, denn das sind nur Kleinigkeiten, die den leidenschaftlichen Saunagänger aber enttäuschen. Vielleicht könnte man die Einrichtung inkl. Ofen der Hauptkammer überdenken (leistungsstärkerer Ofen in die Ecke? Bänke über 2 Etagen? Holzfußboden?)

Als störend empfanden wir den Zigarettenrauch, der in der 1. Etage an manch Tagen in der Luft lag...den Ursprung konnten wir nicht lokalisieren.

Die vielen Spielgelegenheiten auf dem Grundstück (Trampolin, Schaukel, Wippen, große Wiese), die auch von den Kindern der Besitzer rege genutzt werden, sind für Familien mit kleinen Zwergen ideal. Spannend sind auch die vielen Tiere auf dem Hof und im Stall.

Der Preis von 74 € / Person / Nacht inkl. Halbpension empfanden wir aufgrund der angesprochenen Mängel und für die Nebensaison als zu hoch.

Insgesamt können wir den Hof durchaus empfehlen und hoffen, dass die angesprochenen Kritikpunkte konstruktiv...
