On June 11, 1988 the time had come! It was thanks to the "Styrian Wood Museum" association that the wood museum could be opened thanks to the idea and the consistent advancement of the goals. The aim was and still is to present the diversity of wood as a raw material in the Murau district, be it for popular cultural, economic or tourist purposes.
Subsequently, the "wooden idea" spread to the entire Murau district and the "Styrian Wooden Road" was founded. But that's not all: one of the highlights of the Murau district took place in 1995. The Styrian state exhibition "Holzzeit" was organized in Murau and in the Holzmuseum. The state exhibition in the district of Murau found fertile ground and many initiatives have arisen since then.
Holzwelt Murau - today THE regional development association in the Murau district - was also created in October 2004 by merging Steirische Holzstraße, Holzwelt Austria and Holzzeit Murau GmbH. Today the Holzwelt Murau is one of the most important cooperation partners of the wood museum.
