Very scenic! We got incredible views of the castle, town, and surrounding nature.
🚼 A wearable carrier is a must. There are long streams of paved roads, but some areas are unpaved, steep, or otherwise inaccessible with a stroller.
🚙 There isn’t officially-designated parking near the trailhead (a couple of cars were parked on the grass on the side of the road, but that was it). The road going up the mountain is paved but narrow and steep in some areas. It’s better to park in the parking lot in town (free!) and walk to the trailhead. There are plenty of signs marking the Sound of Music trail and others.
🚾 There was a porta potty near a cleared area along the road, but it might only remain during construction. There are free toilets in the center of town and there are clear signs indicating their location.
📅 We went during Austria’s high season, and even then there were only a few other families on the trails. Go during the summer and see lush greenery and wildflowers, or like an acquaintance of mine did, go during winter and see snow on...
Read moreA short (2km one way) but steep hike up to a stunning view. For the difficulty of the trail, it's doable for non-hikers at a slow pace, and not a problem for intermediate hikers or if you're fairly fit. And if like me you've had too much cake while in Austria at their many cafes, it's a nice bit of cardio up the mountain :) Not stroller or bicycle friendly, as it's quite steep the whole way.
The route is not well marked, since the signs are so far apart / scattered around the local neighbourhood that I still relied on Google Maps to show me the way. The whole route is lovely, with a winding road through the local houses before going up the mountain trail.
Absolutely recommend making the trip if you're in Salzburg - the direct train to Werfen is only...
Read moreSuch a beautiful place! It is a fenced off area with some information and photo stations. There is a bench, and some chairs, but that’s pretty much it. It smells a bit due to cow poop that was near the area, and the hike up is challenging. Thankfully after getting off at Werfen station, we were able to talk to a taxi shuttle van, and he gave us a lift to the area for 2.5 euros each. He also came back to pick us up after around 40 minutes, which is more than enough time as you may only need 15-20 minutes to take photos and enjoy the scenery here. The winds were strong and cold when we visited so it wasn’t too pleasant...
