A unique monument of burial that is seen erected on the rocky mountainsides. I saw similar burial monuments seen on the mountainside of these areas of Turkey and Jordanian too. This Mausoleum of Diri-Baba is something different in nature because it is well made and strongly built since 15th Century. When you come to visit the Mausoleum it is intact and strongly built from sandstone and the interior of the rooms are still well stored. Since it is also a Mosque so you can pray inside too. Be careful if you climb up to the second story of the Building because the steps are too steep and the roofing are too low. There are no side-railings to support if you climb high to the top. Be sure that you are fit and none vertigo-prone! To come and visit this mausoleum-Mosque that until now still intact, undamaged is a strong evidence to know what happened in the past and keep it as an unforgettable...
Read moreThe Diri Baba Mausoleum is a 15th-century two-story mausoleum-mosque located in the town of Qobustan near the village of Maraza, on the historic route from Baku to Shamakhi. It was built in 1402 on the order of Shirvanshah Ibrahim I, and considered a masterpiece of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural school. It’s very interesting to walk up to it because it is actually embedded into a cliff, creating the illusion that it is suspended above the ground. A grotto carved in the cliff is believed to be the actual burial place of the saint and the mausoleum is dedicated to Sheikh Diri Baba, also known as Pir Muhammad, a Sufi mystic reputed to have been buried there after his death during prayer. Legends claim his body remained incorrupt for centuries, leading to the name "Diri Baba" meaning "Living...
Read moreThis mausoleum seems to be hanging in the air, mounted on a rock at a high altitude (only one is known to be similar in some elements and a no less mysterious structure - Parau-Bibi, pressed against a rock at a small height in the mountains of Kopetdag) A long staircase leads to it. The steps are quite high, but when you get up, you notice with surprise that you are not tired at all. Perhaps it’s all about the amazing energy of this place, which has been blessed by many generations.
The full name of the architect who built this unique and unlikely tomb has not been preserved. It remains only to patronymic - Ustad Haji oglu. A fragment of this inscription can be seen on the stone, built into the building. From the same inscription it becomes clear that a tomb was...
