The lighthouse did not disappoint. I loved viewing it from all different angles on Hope Town before taking the boat over to see it up close. I did not realize it was that big. The exterior was undergoing repairs when I visited, the interior is clean and well kept. There’s hand sanitizer at the entrance and a guest book inside that you can sign along with some brochures & maps. The climb to the top is 101 steps and the passage is narrow, it’s only wide enough for one person. You can pass people on the landings. The view from the windows are beautiful; once you get to the top the 360 view is breathtaking. Definitely recommend taking the time to visit if you’re in The Abacos.

Climb the 101 steps of this 150 year old light house for excellent views of Hope town. Come near sunset and you may get to see the keeper light the tower. The climb is fairly easy. There is a winding staircase with railings for the majority of the climb with a steep staircase at the top. Crouching through a small porthole gets you to the upper viewing deck. There are windows with great views along the way. The lighthouse uses kerosene and you are able to see the lenses spin. If you get nauseous from the smell of kerosene or vertigo from heights and/or seeing things spin you may want to enjoy the lighthouse from the ground or lower levels

If you visit Hope Town take the time to climb up the Elbow Reef Lighthouse. It is a free and relatively easy climb up the 102 steps. You will be rewarded with a great view of the harbour. You can enjoy the view out the many windows. Crawl through the small steel door to get on the platform for a great view of the harbour. The kerosine vaporizer and exposed gear drive are still visible as are the fresnel lenses that focus light out to 15 miles. As a woodworker I particularly enjoyed the 8 foot cabinet built to match the interior curve of the lighthouse wall. There is a donation box if you want to contribute to maintenance costs.
