The Qal'at al-Bahrain also known as the Bahrain Fort or Portuguese Fort, is an archaeological site located in Bahrain. Archaeological excavations carried out since 1954 have unearthed antiquities from an artificial mound of 12 m (39 ft) height containing seven stratified layers, created by various occupants from 2300 BC up to the 18th century, including Kassites, Greeks, Portuguese and Persians. It was once the capital of the Dilmun civilization and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The archaeological findings, which are unearthed in the fort, reveal much about the history of the country. The area is thought to have been occupied for about 5000 years and contains a valuable insight into the Copper and Bronze Ages of Bahrain. The first Bahrain Fort was built around three thousand years ago, on the northeastern peak of Bahrain Island. The present fort dates from the sixth century AD. The capital of the Dilmun civilization, Dilmun was, according to the Epic of Gilgamesh, the "land of immortality", the ancestral place of Sumerians and a meeting point of gods.

The destination worth a visit. Near by located Bahrain national museum. Two entrance for bahrain fort. One from museum and other from west side. Bahrain fort entrance free. Parking available in both entrance and free. the fort itself to walk around and inside. The views and scenery are very nice too., Specially in sun set. They described the history of fort. Must read it before visit or at the time. Night view also good, they arranged with multi color lights. The museum which you have to pay (2.2BD), but it goes towards maintaining the attraction so worth it. The museum is modern and presented very well. Mainly they describing bahrain past historical life style and village life. The same museum have cafe, which does very nice. it is very expensive, nice setting to sit inside and out side, out side dining area arranged by sea. From the site near beach entry, there is Dune and Quad bike riding. There is some food courts, including traditional foods. Some rides for children's and Horse riding.

Bahrain Fort ( or Portuegese Fort) is located at Al- Qalah village/ Karbabad in the north of Bahrain Island. This site , now somewhat ruins, has been the centre of Dilmun civilization around 2200 B.C. and was a sea route transit between the mesopotamia / Indus Valley . Potugese built this Fort in 1521; but had to flee due to the defeat at the hands of local Bahraini people in 1602. The Current Rulers' ancestors of Bahrain also made some Turkish style modifications in the fort structure.. The location and construction , made of stones and mortar, is such as to control hostages or criminals in the jail ( zindan) cells or the rooms to store food for a long war controlled from within. The entry is free.Better to keep a water bottle with you in the summer. A museum and a cafe are also available nearby. It's interesting to visit it for history and a must for those involved in archaeology .

Qal’at al-Bahrain – Ancient Harbour and Capital of Dilmun Qal’at al-Bahrain is a typical tell – an artificial mound created by many successive layers of human occupation. The strata of the 300 × 600 m tell testify to continuous human presence from about 2300 BC to the 16th century AD. About 25% of the site has been excavated, revealing structures of different types: residential, public, commercial, religious and military. They testify to the importance of the site, a trading port, over the centuries. On the top of the 12 m mound there is the impressive Portuguese fort, which gave the whole site its name, qal’a (fort). The site was the capital of the Dilmun, one of the most important ancient civilizations of the region. It contains the richest remains inventoried of this civilization, which was hitherto only known from written Sumerian references.

It was also known as Al Bahrain Fort or Qal'at al-Bahrain, lies on the tell of Qal'at al-Bahrain in the village of Al Qalah in Bahrain. Up until just a couple of decades ago, it was known as Portugal Fort or Qal'at al-Portugal. Built somewhere between later 13th century to early 14th century. Around 1800 the site was abandoned and eventually covered with drift sand from the sea leading the fort to become a ruin. Until in the late 20th century archaeological excavations were carried out and the ruin of Bahrain Fort was consolidated. source: https://www.castles.nl/bahrain-fort Another free entrance, open and accessible to all from morning until around 22:00 hours. I guess and observed that mostly the structure are refurbished and rehabilitated. It is better if you come here during late afternoon to early evening. Recommended to visit Bahrain

When I visiting the Qal'at al-Bahrain it was humbling how much you could actually feel the history here. It’s a beautiful piece of ancient construction that tells a lot of stories. If you’re near the area I highly suggest checking this place out. Due to the dense history, I would recommend studying up on the place first though for a quick remedial history lesson before you go. To really soak in the experience and enjoy being there. To put yourself into the mindsets of the warriors who once roamed the corridors of this magnificent, 17 1/2 acre construction. When I went, there was no crowd. It was late in the year, but the weather was great. Very nice people. Beautiful place. Great place for enthusiasts of ancient history. Alsalam ealaykum شكرا لاستضافتي في مملكتك الجميلة.
