Mathiner Koop: A Well of Love and Legend Mathiner Koop, located in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, is not just a simple well but a symbol of eternal love and sacrifice. This historical site is associated with a tragic yet beautiful love story between Mathin, a tribal princess, and Dhiraj Bhattacharya, a British police officer stationed in Teknaf during the colonial period. The Legend Behind Mathiner Koop The story goes that Mathin, the daughter of a tribal chief, fell in love with Dhiraj Bhattacharya. However, due to social and family restrictions, they could not be together. Heartbroken, Mathin stopped eating and drinking, eventually passing away near this well. Since then, the well has been named “Mathiner Koop” (Mathin’s Well) as a tribute to her undying love. Why Visit Mathiner Koop? ✔ A Place of Romance & Tragedy: The site carries a deep emotional connection, making it an interesting spot for history lovers and romantics. ✔ Historical & Cultural Significance: The well has been preserved as a heritage site, attracting visitors who want to explore its history. ✔ Serene and Peaceful Ambience: Located in Teknaf Police Station premises, the area around the well is quiet and well-maintained, making it a nice place to reflect on its story. ✔ Photographic Spot: The historic well, old structures, and surrounding greenery provide a good backdrop for photography. Things to Consider ✖ Limited Activities: Unlike beaches or waterfalls, this site is more about history and emotions, so it’s a short visit rather than a full-day trip. ✖ Restricted Area: Since it is inside police station grounds, visitors should maintain respectful behavior. 4.0/5 – Mathiner Koop is a place of history, romance, and legend. While it may not offer adventure, its emotional and cultural significance makes it a must-visit for those who appreciate historical love stories.

Visited on July 1, 2025 — A historical and cultural value. I had the pleasure of visiting Mathiner Kup with my family on a warm July afternoon. Nestled in a peaceful setting, this site carries a sense of quiet dignity and heritage that’s often missing from more commercial tourist spots. The well, built in memory of Rani Mathin, remains a symbol of love and devotion — and while the physical structure is simple, the story behind it is deeply moving. It’s a wonderful place to pause, reflect, and introduce family members, especially children, to a lesser-known but culturally important landmark in the region. The area was clean, access was easy. Combine your visit with nearby attractions and make it part of a day tour — it’s worth the short stop, especially for those who enjoy exploring places with a soul. Recommended for families and cultural explorers alike.
