The Mainamati Rana Cemetery was originally a cemetery of Indian (then) and British soldiers killed in World War II (1939-1945). It was made in 1943-1944. It is very close to Comilla Cantonment, about 7 kilometers away from Comilla town. This cemetery was established by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and they are the ones who manage this cemetery. Every year in November, an annual prayer meeting was organized in the form of religious leaders of all religions. Although Mainamati was a small village during that time, it became a large base of the army. Here is a large hospital. Apart from this, Comilla was the field of war supplies, air bases, and the headquarters of the 14th Army, before being shifted to Imphal in 1944. There are 736 graves in this cemetery. Most of these are the deceased soldiers of the hospital at that time. Besides, some bodies were moved from place to place after the war and buried here. According to the army, there are 3 sailors, 567 soldiers and 166 pilots. [1] The total number of victims of 723 deaths was possible. An arcade in the entrance of the tomb, in which the walls and walls of this cemetery have a wall plaque inserted in history and story written in English and Bangla. Inside the straight path in front, on which there is a burial rope on the rows. According to the religion of the soldiers, their grave fruit can be seen in the name of the name, death date, posthumous and religious symbol as well - crossing the grave of Christians, Arabic writing on the grave of Muslims (eg: Hual Gafur) is notable. There is an elevated staircase on the right side of the pedestal, crossing the holy symbol of Christendom. There are two more arcades on the side of the altar. These arcades can be made to the backside of the cemetery. There are also many grave slabs there. Each flower grape is decorating in between the two grave pockets. There are lots of trees in the entire cemetery. There is an exceptional grave beside the wide side of the front of the cemetery, where the place is surrounded by a place with 23 grave slabs. This place was originally a Massacre of 23 Airplane, with the words: These plaques bear the names of twenty three Airmen whose remains lie here in one grave

The Mainamati War Cemetery, located near the Comilla Cantonment in Bangladesh, stands as a solemn tribute to the soldiers who perished during World War II. Established in 1946 by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the cemetery is the final resting place for 737 soldiers from 13 nations, including the United Kingdom, India, Canada, Australia, and Japan . Nestled amidst lush greenery and indigenous flowering trees, the cemetery offers a serene environment that belies the tragedies it commemorates. The graves are meticulously arranged, with Christian graves situated between the entrance and a central hill, while Muslim graves lie beyond it. A prominent Cross of Sacrifice stands midway up the hill, facing the entrance, symbolizing the collective sacrifice of those interred . Each headstone bears the name, rank, and regiment of the deceased, often accompanied by poignant inscriptions from loved ones. For instance, the plaque for 20-year-old Flight Sergeant G.K. Gibb of the Royal Australian Air Force reads, “He answered his country’s call. Always remembered. RIP” . The cemetery not only serves as a historical site but also as a place of reflection and remembrance. Every November, diplomats and relatives from various countries visit to pay their respects, laying floral tributes and observing moments of silence . Visiting the Mainamati War Cemetery is a humbling experience, offering insight into the profound sacrifices made during one of history’s most tumultuous periods. It stands as a poignant reminder of the cost of war and the enduring value of peace.

The Mainamati War Cemetery, also known as Kumilla War Cemetery, is a war cemetery and a memorial in Kumilla, which contains graves of those, who sacrificed their lives in the Second World War from the nearby areas. The cemetery contains 736 Commonwealth burials of the war.

It was established and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), to pay tribute to those martyrs of the Second World War. The cemetery is located in the Kumilla Cantonment area.

Before the war, Mainamati was a hamlet of a few dozen huts. However, during the war, a large military camp was established over there. Several ordinance depots and a number of military hospitals, both British and Indian, were in the area, including Nos. 14 and 150 British General Hospitals.

The majority of the burials in the cemetery were from those hospitals. The Army Graves Service and the Commission further moved graves from isolated places nearby and also some from as far afield as Burma into the cemetery.

They even felt necessary to transfer some graves from small cemeteries of Dhaka, Faridpur, Paksay, Saidpur, Santahar and Sirajganj, where they could not be maintained.

The cemetery was initiated by the Army and laid out by the garrison engineer. The beautiful cemetery is adorned by a small flat-topped hill crowned with indigenous flowers and evergreen trees.

Between the entrance and this hill, the headstones of the Christian and Muslim graves lie in rows on different sides. Majestically a shelter looks over the Muslim graves to a tree-framed view of the countryside beyond.

There are inscriptions written on each grave stating the name, date of birth and date of death of the martyr.

On a terrace about half-way up the hill, the Cross of Sacrifice stands tall, facing the entrance welcoming all those who step in.

Visitors are sure to be enchanted with the picturesque ambient of the cemetery and the tranquility it offers.

How to go -

Kumilla has great transport and communication system. Travellers can go by train or bus or car from Dhaka to Kumilla. It is 97 km away from the capital. Travellers can take a bus from bus stands at Kamlapur, Sayedabad etc.

After reaching the Kumilla Sadar upazila, travellers can take a rickshaw and come to West Forezpur to visit...

Mainamati War Cemetery also known as Commonwealth war cemetery was established after the World War II in memory of the allied soldiers who died during World War I and II, mostly from Commonwealth states and the United States. This cemetery was established by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and they are the ones who are maintaining this cemetery.

Every year in November, an annual prayer meeting was organised in the form of religious leaders of all religions.

In the graveyard some of 738 soldiers who were dignified from general soldier to Brigadier and died after being wounded in the World War II had been buried here. An arcade in the entrance of the tomb, in which the walls and walls of this cemetery have a wall plaque inserted in history and story written in English and Bengali. Inside the straight path in front, on which there is a burial rope on the rows. According to the religion of the soldiers, their grave can be seen in the name plate, death date, posthumous and religious symbol as well - crossing the grave of Christians, Arabic writing on the grave of Muslims is notable. The cemetery is 1 kilometer down the road leading from Cumilla to Sylhet and a short distance past the Cantonment Military Hospital. This is a tranquil place and 738 bodies are lying here. Everybody’ll feel sympathy during walking through the graves. It’s too much touchy especially when anyone read the names from the epitaph. The cemetery is open from morning 7:00am to 12:00pm and from afternoon 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

Without this timing anyone cannot enter inside the Cemetery, they are strict...
