সতী মায়ের ৫১ পীঠের ৪৯তম পীঠ সত্য যুগে দক্ষ যজ্ঞের পর সতী মাতা দেহ ত্যাগ করলে মহাদেব সতীর মৃতদেহ কাঁধে নিয়ে বিশ্বব্যাপী প্রলয় নৃত্য শুরু করলে বিষ্ণু দেব সুদর্শন চক্র দ্বারা সতীর মৃতদেহ ছেদন করেন। এতে সতী মাতার দেহখন্ডসমূহ ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের বিভিন্ন স্থানে পতিত হয় এবং এ সকল স্থানসমূহ শক্তিপীঠ হিসেবে পরিচিতি পায়।[৪] বিভিন্ন সূত্র মতে, করতোয়াতটের এ ভবানীপুরে সতী মাতা তারার বাম পায়ের অলঙ্কার বা বাম পাঁজর বা ডান চোখ বা বিছানা পড়েছিল বলে জানা যায়।[৫] ভবানীপুর বাংলাদেশ তথা ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের বিখ্যাত শক্তিপীঠসমূহের মধ্যে অন্যতম। জাতি-ধর্ম-বর্ণ নির্বিশেষে দেশ-বিদেশের ভক্তরা সারা বছর এখানে তীর্থে আসেন।
কথিত আছে যে এখানে একদা একজন শাঁখাওয়ালা (শাঁখা নির্মাতা) ভবানীপুর মন্দিরের ধারের গভীর জঙ্গলের পাশের একটি পুকুরের ধার অতিক্রম করছিলেন। এমন সময় সিঁথিতে সিঁদুর দেয়া একটি ছোট মেয়ে তার কাছে গিয়ে বলেছিল যে সে নাটোর রাজবাড়ির রাজকন্যা। সে শাঁখাওয়ালার কাছ থেকে এক জোড়া শাঁখা কিনল এবং বলল যে শাঁখাওয়ালা যেন নাটোরের মহারাণীকে বলেন যে প্রাসাদের একটি নির্দিষ্ট জায়গায় রাখা ঝুড়ি থেকে তার শাঁখার দাম দিয়ে দেন। শাঁখাওয়ালা মেয়েটির বিনীত কথায় মুগ্ধ হয়ে তাকে শাঁখা দিয়ে দিলেন। শাঁখাওয়ালার মুখ থেকে ছোট মেয়েটির কথা শুনে মহারাণী লোকজন ও সেই শাঁখাওয়ালাকে নিয়ে মেয়েটির বলা জায়গায় গেলেন। শাঁখাওয়ালার প্রার্থনা শুনে মা ভবানী সেই শাঁখা-পুকুর থেকে তার দুই হাতের শাঁখা তুলে দেখালেন। মহারানী ও সেখানে উপস্থিত লোকজন এতে বিস্মিত হলেন এবং মা ভবানীর (মা তারার) মহিমা এই উপমহাদেশে ছড়িয়ে পড়ল।
