As the gallery has a wide variety of local artists I thought this would be a wonderful place to take my children during the holidays as a "field trip". As a local artist and art teacher I was hoping to expand their horizons and create an appreciation for art in Barbados. They brought a sketch pad and pencil crayons and were to sketch their favourite paintings. We arrived near to the end of the day. Not a soul in sight. We quietly began sketching on the floor, not blocking the paintings or the passage ways at all. You would not have known knew we were there. To make a long story short we were very rudely stopped because we were not "customers" and the children were made to feel horribly wrong and inappropriate. So much for encouraging the next generation a love of art! The children politely thanked the custodian as we left but I was left feeling completely disgusted. Very disappointed in the elitist behaviour I saw today especially towards a group that was respectful towards the gallery and its art...
