Impressive monument, the name Mardasson comes from the hill supporting it. It has been created in 1950 by Belgian people as a mark of recognition for the US heroic resistance during 1944 battle of the Bulge. The dimensions of the monument create an emotional atmosphere given the history : the different US state are marqued in stone, including Hawaii and Alaska that were not part of USA during WW II. It is possible to reach the roof to observe surrounding.

Don't miss the museum nearby, the...

The monument has actually been closed for renovations since 2020 and when were there last week (June 2024) the sign outside was outdated and there's no sign of any work being done on it. Since it's now under the responsibility of the US what are they doing?? I can't find anything on their website giving updates. There's no way this will be open for the 80th in December. Extremely disappointing as we went there to see where my FIL fought as a member of the...

Gorgeous monument for the fallen heroes that liberated Belgium, especially Bastogne. It's build like the shape of the American Star, featuring the 50 states, panels containing the names of all the featured (American) armies/batallions, such as the 101st Airborne Division (the Screaming Eagles). In the middle circle there are 10 panels containing the story of the Battle of the Bulge. There's a chance that an American veteran is present, who does a tour around the monument and tells the story of the Ardennes Counteroffensive.

A fitting tribute to all the American troops who gave their lives. The memorial is free entry but the museum that occupies the same site is 22€ per person that added to the 5€ parking charge it does start to become expensive. The memorial and grounds are well worth a visit if you want to pay your respects for free and the first 20 mins parking is free.
