Deze in 1974 opgerichte betonnen toren van ongeveer 35 meter hoog, is een ontwerp van de Brusselse architect Jacques Moeschal. De Sjouwer staat op een heuvel die bestaat uit de, bij het uitgraven van de E17, vrijgekomen klei. Het monument is opgericht ter ere van de West-Vlaamse grensarbeiders/seizoesarbeiders, waarvan er velen tussen 1930 en 1960 de grens over trokken om in het toenmalige Nord Pas de Calais het zware seizoenswerk uit te voeren. Ons bezoek aan de sjouwer is heel goed meegevallen. Om de hoek vind je de beste koffiebar langs de E17. Vooral de café con leché viel bij ons allemaal...
