Fort Napoleon situated on the beach of Belgium North Sea coast line, in Oostende was built by the great Napoleon in 1811 when France occupied Belgium. He thought the English fleet is going to attack him there and he put people to built that Fort. English didn’t so this was used as a watch point and later, used as a garrison for german soldiers during the 1st and the 2nd World War. The Fort was completely restored in 1995 and now it is a beautiful place to visit

Interesting place to gain basic facts connected to military history of Oostende via audioguide. Otherwise inside the fortress not much to be seen, that means entrance fee seems to be too high. Nice view from a roof, free parking nearby and free ferry boat to city centre in walking distance if you want to visit it. Current Tik Tak expo is designed for smaller children, so when visited be prepared for a little noisy atmosphere.

Robust and Solidly fortified fort makes for an enjoyable landmark visit

Did I mention the fort is sturdy? :)

We went there on a Sunday morning. We almost had the place to ourselves.

To reach the fort from the Oostende train station, you have to walk North and take the ferry (it was free, at least the day we went) to reach the body of land to the East. From there, follow the signs to the fort.

The fort itself is a pentagonal napoleonic bunker multiple times remodelled by its various occupants, most notably during WWI, when it accommodated german soldiers.

The entry fee was I believe 6.50 euros per adult and included an audio guide.

From the entrance you simple have to follow the numbers, punch them into the handheld device, and listen to the explanations.

There is some modern and weird art on display along the way, but we didn't care much for it. What is interesting is the building itself. We enjoyed in particular, the moat, the arrowslits, the thick thick walls (2,5 metres !!!) and the view from the top.

The path takes you through every nook and cranny of the fort and the audio guide explains the history of the building and its various occupants, the purpose of each room and explores the military strategies employed during attacks.

It's a great place for anyone that enjoys castles.

Tips & Tricks

Birds have made their nest in some of the exterior arrowslits: go take a look!

The Mercator near Oostende station makes for a great complementary visit.

Nice if you have kids but not for adults. We wanted to see the fort of Napoleon but instead found ourselves in the midst of an expo for kids. They gave us some audio-files to listen to, but unless you brought a headset you would not be able to hear anything due to the sound produced from the other expo. Really unfortunate to have to stand behind another exposition to listen to the file for Napoleons intentions with the fort. We were also supposed to follow numbers, but these numbers were nearly impossible to find, I still don't know where nr. 13 and 14 is.

Would not recommend, enjoy the nice...
