Raeren Castle — Attraction in Raeren

We moved into a property in England, where whilst digging in our garden we started to find shards of different centuries. A considerable were definitely not local and for our astonishment we discovered that these once utensils could have come from Raeren. In hope of ascertaining this and after two years of Covid havoc we decided to finally visit Raeren pottery museum. Voilà! It was like coming home. Full circle. We recommend visiting this museum. The castle is well worth a stop! Set in the gorgeous scenery of Eastern Belgium, its museum presents the town of Raeren's past as a international producer of ceramics. It showcases both objects used in daily life and outstanding treasures meant for rich patrons. Explanations are given in German, French and English. German speakers can also enjoy detailed books that provide plenty of additional details on the collection. Staff is friendly and multilingual, and the 5€ adult entry fee is excellent...

Erbaut wurde die Burg in der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts auf dem Gelände einer alten Eisenschmelze, unmittelbar am Zusammenfluss von Iter- und Periolbach gelegen. Der ursprüngliche Wohnturm, der von großen Weihern umgeben war, wurde im Jahre 1583 nach einem Brand von dem damaligen Besitzer Philip von Lomont restauriert und um fast das Doppelte vergrößert. Im Laufe des 18. Jahrhunderts entstand die Anlage, wie sie sich heute präsentiert.
