Fort 2, Wommelgem

Fort 2, located in Wommelgem, is one of the eight brick forts built between 1860 and 1864 as part of the defensive belt around Antwerp, designed by Captain and fort architect Henri Alexis Brialmont.

History

The fort played an active role during World War I. On October 8, 1914, it fired on enemy positions, although this ultimately proved ineffective. During World War II, the fort was not directly involved in combat but served as a workshop for the Luftwaffe. After the war, the fort remained in use by the Belgian army as a logistical support point for military transport until 1975.

In 1977, the Wommelgem municipal government purchased Fort 2 and repurposed it as a museum fort. Today, it houses seven museums, including the Brialmont Museum, the Provincial Police Museum, the Musical Instrument Museum, the Saint-Elooi Museum, and the World War I & II Museum. A notable attraction is the Cannon Gallery, where visitors can see 19th-century artillery.

Current Use

In addition to its museum function, Fort 2 is a vibrant center for various associations and activities. The inner fort, officers' building, and main front building serve as bases for many Wommelgem organizations. The surrounding 33-hectare green domain is a paradise for walkers and cyclists. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the football field, athletics track, and pétanque courts.

Accessibility

The inner fort is freely accessible to visitors. Parking spaces for people with disabilities are available in the dry moat, although the historic cobblestone paths can be challenging to navigate. A wheelchair lift is available in the inner fort, with access keys provided by organizations located on the first floor. The outer fort is only accessible during association activities, guided tours, or special events.

Transport Links

Fort 2 is accessible via various bus and tram lines. Nearby bus stops include Wommelgem Fort II-straat and Borsbeek J. Reusenslei, while the Silsburg tram stop is within walking distance of the fort.

With its rich history and diverse functions, Fort 2 is a unique and lively part of Wommelgem, where culture, heritage, and recreation...

Quite an experience. This is one of 7 remaining forts built around Antwerp after world war I. It was used by the military until the late seventies after which it was completely smashed up by vandals (even the swimming pool).

It is now a community environment for local clubs such as table tennis, model trains, scouts, athletic clubs etc.

You can go in the fort or go for a nice walk around the moat (about 45 minutes). Also popular with joggers who get...
