Such a cool hidden gem! We got the shuttle (15bz per person) from San Ignacio market in the morning and were picked up by Rudy. He is super friendly and informative and we learned a lot about the gardens, local area and Belize in general. Highly recommend getting the shuttles, as it was a smooth and hassle-free experience. We then opted for the self-guided tour (20bz per person) and they gave us a map and booklet containing information about so many trees and plants. You should pay for the shuttles along with the entrance fee after arriving at the garden office. We could find all of the trails pretty easily and there’s even a river right next to it where we could take a quick dip! All in all, totally worth it. All the staff, including the lady at the market shop, were so sweet and they are doing great conservation work for the local community.

We got the 1pm shuttle (book at the office in the market, or number in photo) and had a really lovely afternoon walking round the trails. They are well maintained, easy to follow with the map and the signs. We had enough time to walk round all of it with lots of stops for birds before the 4pm shuttle back. The self-guided booklet was interesting, you can tell a lot of work has gone into making it. We saw a lot more birds than we expected in the heat, including Toucans and Acaris. But mainly what made it so special was meeting Rudy who has worked there for 19 years - his passion was infectious! He chatted to us a lot about the gardens and the work they do during the journeys and we were so glad to meet him 🙂

I'll start by saying that it's worth the bumpy drive to get there. We drove Kia Soul and didn't have too much trouble as long as you go slow. When we arrived we had the place to ourselves...well mostly, we had three great tour guides of the canine variety who accompanied us on the whole trip! They would take a tip though....(see photo) Should take you about an hour to see everything. It's very well done and ground are very well kept. You'll receive a booklet explaining all the points in the park. They also include a nice explanation of the history of the item. Bring water, it gets very hot in the jungle. Plenty of free parking and a bathroom.

We loved it here and highly recommend visiting the Belize Botanical Gardens!

The dirt road up has been improved, and so the drive is easily doable in the dry season. We made it there fine in standard car, but an SUV would be preferred. In the wet season, you might want to call ahead for recommendations on the drive, and will probably need something better suited for the roads than a regular car. They have a shuttle service for 15 bz per person that leaves from San Ignacio twice a day and a booth in the San Ignacio Market where you can chat with them and book it. If you’re doing the tea tour you’ll need to book in advance so that they have enough time to prepare.

We did the medicine tour with Rudy. Rudy was a fantastic guide and we not only learn about the medicinal uses of different plants but the cultural significance, history, as well as current conflicts around certain plants. He is a brilliant storyteller and very passionate about conservation. We got to smell, taste, and connect with lots of different plants that we then continued to see during our stay in Belize. Do bring...

I would not recommend going during winter, there wasn’t much to see (not any fruits or beautiful flowers).

I can imagine it being beautiful and interesting in summer. It’s a well maintained garden full of passionate staff. We saw a monkey but no toucans.

The shuttle is good as other people have mentioned, you need to phone them and meet at the market at the Health Food Store (number is on the website). The only downside is that it means you are stuck there for 3.5hrs until they take you back as it’s far from main town. During winter when there isn’t much to see, we were finished after 1.5hrs. Overall it was average in winter but come summer, I’m sure it would be amazing! We were just unfortunate to be there at the wrong...
