Known as the “Fortress of the Auspicious Hill” the magnificent Trashigang Monastery sits on the edge of a ridge overlooking the Drangme chu / River and surrounding valleys. The Dzong served as the eastern political stronghold for more than 300 years warding off various local and Tibetan invasions. With the steep cliff on all the three sides, this spectacular structure is only accessible from the North through a narrow road making it one of the strategically located Dzong in Bhutan. The Dzong withstood many Tibetan invasions and according to the legend, Tibetan invaders were so overwhelmed upon seeing the Dzong, that before retreating remarked that the Dzong was not on the ground but suspended in the sky. Like many of the Dzong in Bhutan the building of the Trashigang Dzong was also prophesized by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel (the saint who unified Bhutan) to spread Buddhism and to garner control over the eastern parts of the country. Today the Dzong serves as a school for monastic education for the monks along with sharing space with the offices of the District Administration. Read moreThis was a pretty typical dzong in a lot of ways. On a ridge below higher mountains, overlooking a valley and river below.
Compared to other dzongs, it's a bit mediocre. Not particularly big, not particularly impressive, and the surrounding scenery is pretty average. You won't be missing much if you never make it as far east as Trashigang to see this dzong.
However, if you're in Trashigang, of course it's worth stopping at, especially since it's the only noteworthy...
