Chorten Kora is an important stupa next to the Kulong Chu River in Trashiyangtse, in East Bhutan. Nearby is a town of the same name. The stupa was built in the 18th century by the 3rd Lam of Rigsumgoenpa, His Imminence Lam Ngawang Loday the nephew of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The place was known as Dhuerong, (valley of demons) because it was infested with demons and other evils which attacked the people and animals both day and night. The people living along the Kholongchu could not bear this misery, and approached Lam Ngawang Loday with the request to protect them from these evil forces. To repel and subdue the evil forces, the Lam decided to build a Chorten resembling the Boudhanath Stupa popularly known as Jarung Khashor.

The chorten was modelled after Boudhanath stupa in Nepal, which the lama carved out of a radish. Differences between the Chorten Kora and Boudhanath stupas are reportedly due to distortion of the model as it shrunk on the return journey of the lama to Bhutan. The pinnacle was originally carved out of a huge stone, which Lama Shacha Gyalpo wanted to replace with a gilded cupola. No one could think of a way to bring down the pinnacle. So, the lama performed prayers during the day and the stone miraculously descended at night. It is still found beside the chorten.

When the construction reached the completion of the vase (Bumpa) section, it is believed that a 16 years old Khandum from the Dhagpa community of Tawang entered the Chorten on her own accord and disappeared naturally into the Chorten on the 15th Day of the First Bhutanese month.

Chorten Kora, Trashiyangtse District, Bhutan Chorten Kora took twelve years to construct and The consecration ceremony of the Chorten was presided over by HH The 13th Je Khenpo, Yonten Thayey on the 30th Day of the First Bhutanese month. The demon that had harmed the people of the valley was apparently subdued and banished. Thereafter, it is said that the people of the valley continue to live in peace...

Visiting Chorten Kora in the quiet, verdant valley of Trashiyangtse, Eastern Bhutan, was like stepping back into living history. It’s an essential stop if you're looking for a profound spiritual experience far from the main tourist hubs of Paro and Thimphu. The Chorten itself is massive and strikingly white, built in the style of Nepal's Boudhanath Stupa. This 18th-century masterpiece is nestled between a dense forest and the Kholong Chu River. What truly impressed me was the contrast between the ancient structure and the vibrancy of the prayer flags that endlessly crisscross the area, carrying prayers on the mountain breeze. The heart of the visit is the Kora, the ritual circumambulation. I joined the welcoming local pilgrims, spinning the huge prayer wheels. The energy of devotion was palpable, creating a powerful sense of sanctuary and community where the only sounds were mantras and the distant rush of the river.Chorten Kora is a majestic jewel offering deep peace. It’s a perfect place to slow down, breathe the mountain air, and absorb centuries of devotion. If your itinerary takes you to the east, make the journey—you absolutely won't regret...
