An interesting place to visit for an hour or so. It is a must see for tourists to La Paz because, well, because that's what all the guide books say. The "park" is definitely focused on visits from foreign tourists. It is very clean and well kept up. That's not always the case with points of interest in Bolivia. However don't expect a lot of attention to the aspect of the personal safety of visitors. Much like life in general in Bolivia, you are expected to watch out for your own safety at all times. So don't put your trust in the strength of barricades along cliffs or steep drop-offs. And just because there is no railing present doesn't mean you can't easily fall and seriously hurt yourself. The focal point of the park are the gift shops, which have an interesting variety of souvenirs, priced at what you would expect in a place like this (in other words, expensive.) I say focal point because the only way to get to the actual Valle de la Luna is to walk down into a recessed area where all the shops are located, and then from there you can access the entrance to the geological formations. Don't forget to read the boards that have been put up with explanations of the park. If English is your native language then you'll get a chuckle out of the attempt to translate the explanations into English. However they are informative. On one hand, the formations in Valle de la Luna are beautiful and intriguing. On the other hand, there is not much to the park. There are two trails, a short one and an extended one, but they can be walked in 30 minutes. To stop and take pictures (of course!) you could spend up to an hour or so. And then... that's it. (Don't forget the shops!) It is a stark and fascinating contrast to the huge metropolitan city of La Paz which is practically a stone's throw away. But in and of itself, it is little more than an interesting place to visit on a lazy afternoon for a change of pace. I'm glad I went, but I probably...

Read moreWhat has happened over the countless centuries when strong winds have battered the clay and sandstone mountains is that you now have a wonderful natural phenomenon which looks like a vast tapestry of stalagmites called “VALLE DE LA LUNA” or the Valley of the Moon. This is quite typical of the mountains surrounding the La Paz region. Valley of the Moon is about 20 to 30 minute drive from La Paz near the small town of Mallasa. The entry ticket is 15BOB for foreigners and 3BOB for locals. A trail takes you into the valley and along the formations. Like any trail over natural terrain it is uneven and narrow at places but many spots to sit and enjoy the beauty and take photos as well. It can take about an hour to two hours to walk the entire trail and take in the fascinating natural wonder. In 1969 Neil Armstrong, the man who walked on the moon, while playing golf at a nearby golf course saw this formation and it reminded him of what he saw on the moon and hence the name - Valley of the Moon. Special note:- While walking on the trails, please talk in low voices as the sound carries and gets amplified in narrow...
