Summary: Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat (10,582 km²), formed from ancient lakes and rich in minerals like lithium and sodium. Located at a high altitude (3,656m), it features:

Mirror Effect in the rainy season (Dec–Apr) with reflective water surfaces.

Dry Season Highlights include hexagonal salt patterns and cactus-covered islands like Incahuasi.

Wildlife & Landscapes: Colorful lagoons with flamingos and fossil-covered terrain.

Economic Value: Contains ~70% of the world’s lithium, though mining is limited.

Cultural Myth: Believed by locals to be the tears of a mountain goddess.

Altitude Sickness Tips:

Acclimatize in high cities (La Paz, Sucre) before visiting.

Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol/caffeine.

Use coca tea/leaves for relief.

Consider Diamox (acetazolamide) and carry pain relievers.

Rest and descend if symptoms worsen; oxygen is available in town clinics.

Packing Tips for Tours:

Spend a minimum of a week. Awesome desolation. Expect minimal services, be amazed by the locals. Go, climb a mountain, eat the salt, take a multi-day driving tour, eat llama, experience altitude headaches, experience awesome desolation. Not for the weak or folks expecting luxury, this place is for folks who want unique no frills awesomeness... Certain times of the year there are few visitors, have desolation all to yourself. The Stars are like nowhere else... I live where folks think the stars are amazing... then I went here and found what they really look like. Almost like seeing space from...

Unique place on earth, where you drive with your own car, van, mobilhome on a white salt lake, with a tremendous view. At least in the dry season. In the wet season you will drive on a mirror, but you have to take care where you drive. One advise, go to a car wash (lavado), and let them prepare the car to protect it agains the salt (they use black oil). And afterwards go back, and let them clean your car from the salt. You will pay only 80...

Super cool place, amazing colours during the sunset/sunrise. Those cactuses on the island are out of this world! If you go to the water, wear several socks and use plastic bags - often the boots provided have holes. Even though I liked the night sky during the night tour, it was way too cold and I could not feel my feet. The day tour is more than enough. Do not try to eat the salt:)
