Jajce, in the central region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a historic city all about falling water. Famous for its enormous waterfall in the middle of town, the meeting of two rivers – the Pliva and the Vrbas – established the region in the 14th century as the capital of the then Kingdom of Bosnia. There’s a town castle, old fortified city walls, high mountains and deep river valleys. And just downstream, in the area of the Pliva Lakes, is a collection of about 20 little huts that once served as watermills for local farmers. The little windowless huts sit on top of skinny stilts right over the gushing water. Since the flow here is spread out, by using a series of little mills instead of one big water wheel, the diffuse water power could be aggregated. Pretty ingenious. Most of the huts go back to the period of the Austro-Hungarian empire (about 1867 to 1918), and they give the impression of a little storybook village.

No longer used for actual milling, the Pliva Lakes watermills draw tourists down the river from the giant waterfall in town. That one is certainly impressive with its showy 65-foot drop. But the little shingled watermills feel like they might be home to some local trolls, with their dragons hitched...

Greeting Municiple director in-charge Date of incident : 16 August 2025 Time: 13:12 hours

We elected to have our family summer vacation at your great country . One of our destination during our land trip acriss Bosnia was heading from Sarajevo toward Bihac . We were 32 tourists in a bus . We pulled over at water Mills of Jajce (Mlinčići) . We used the only WC available at that spot . Unfortunately, two ladies were sitting at door entrance of the WC to charge 1 kM per head . There treatment to the tourists were rude , unploite , and aggressive. The WC for both Male/ Female sections were substandard / low level of cleanliness and only one toilet per section was available! The sink was not connectd to the sewer system . I do propose to replace both ladies or ban them from human- human interaction and upgrade the subject WC service by reinovation & expansion .

Your swiftly and timely actions are highly appreciated

Such a serene, beautiful place and the sound of the gushing water gives a peaceful vibe to this place. I would recommend this amazing place to anyone who comes to visit Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Are you tired of visiting cities with the same old fountains and plazas? Let me introduce you to a hidden gem in central #Bosnia 🇧🇦 that will give you something new to explore. Presenting 📍 JAJCE. Imagine a stunning 22-meter-high waterfall right in the centre of the town; that’s the #JajceWaterfall. It’s not just beautiful but also recognized as one of the 12 most beautiful waterfalls in the world. But wait, there’s more! Jajce is also home to the Great and Small #PlivaLakes, and #PlivaWatermills, making it a natural paradise. For history buffs, Jajce was the capital of the independent Kingdom of Bosnia, and there’s so much to explore, like the remains of the #JajceFortress, and #JajceCatacombs, an underground church built during the Ottoman period. But what touched me most about Jajce was the people and their hospitality. So pack your bags and plan a trip to this offbeat destination today. #Jajce is waiting for you! This post is part of my ongoing #travelseewriteineurope series. Stay tuned for more updates. 📸 shot on @lumix #lumixs5ii & @apple #iphone14promax.
