No, this is not a joke generated by the modern trend and popularity of cat memes! In Cyprus, in all seriousness, a cat monastery was founded.
Even in Byzantine times, imperial persons for Cyprus were given cats not to raise the island’s mimimeter, but to fight against snakes. To save this formidable 'weapon', a monastery was organized, and with it a shelter. The cats coped well with their task, destroying a dangerous enemy, for which they respect and honor. Still stands the monastery of St. Nicholas on the Akrotiri peninsula, being a refuge for cats.
Of course, now the population of monastic cats has decreased significantly - we caught no more than 30 heads. Having learned human habits for years, they are waiting for tourists at the parking lot at the entrance to the monastery in order to pounce on the two-legs waiting for an easy food. Those who are bolder are looking for vulnerable spots in the car in order to get there in search of bags of food; the rest are rubbing their feet, marking their new friends. Unfortunately, we don’t have a special walk around the territory of the monastery - the gates are closed, the nuns cannot be seen. It would be curious to learn about their life and the art of...
Read morePrior to visiting Cyprus was wandering the area on Google maps. Spotted the salt lake, zooming in, I saw the magic word "cats" jokingly said we'd have to go. We ended up going twice. As recommended by previous reviewers, we took wet cat food, 16 pouches the first rime, 24 the second, and treats, 2 bags, then 3. Some of the cats are friendly, and they will accept stroking, ear scratches, or even get on your lap. Others just want admiring for afar. We also took bottles of water, but they had clean water. If you can stretch to a bowl plate or some type of container, all the better. First time we went, I ended up using the empty containers as plates. I did wait until all was consumed and the binned the rubbish (bag hanging on a door. Didn't realise there was a dumpster in the car park or would have disposed of the full bags to replace with my 1. Did say there was a donation box, but we couldn't find it. There is also a dispenser in the car park for dry...
