TLDR: Go somewhere else for scuba or charter/boating needs.
We used JVD Scuba to book two two-tank dives for 4 of our group and a 7-hour catamaran trip for our entire 11-person group, well ahead of our visit in December 2022. Our first day of diving was at Great Thatch and our other day of diving was over near Sandy Spit. The Sandy Spit trip was rather choppy, but we still had a good time. Alex, who guided all of our dives was fantastic - friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, pro-safety, and full of interesting facts and stories about BVI.
Our catamaran trip was marked down on Colin's calendar for the wrong day, so when he realized it was written down wrong he told us our trip had to be cut shorter than originally planned because he needed the boat back for a water taxi. The morning of, there was communication about confusion with the boat, but Colin assured us "This will UNDOUBTEDLY be the best day of anyone's vacation who comes on the charter!!!! Guaranteed." and "The weather is perfect and the boat is ready." After boating through some of the choppiest water I've ever experienced (5ft swells), we reached Norman Island where we spent a few hours snorkeling. We were very disappointed we weren't able to do the majority of things we had planned for our boat route due to timing and conditions - The Baths, Monkey Point, The Indians, and Manchioneel Bay (all things Colin claimed in advance could be done in a day trip if we hustle), but we still made the best of our experience at Norman Island.
My stars in this review go solely to Colin's staff, especially Alex for diving; not Colin, who himself is conceited and smug. We experienced challenges with Colin regarding communication, and my interactions and experiences with JVD Scuba did not live up to my expectations in any way. While he "guaranteed" our charter day would be the best, our group would agree it was easily the most stressful and challenging of our time on Jost Van Dyke. While Jost Van Dyke is a GREAT island and I would highly recommend visiting it, I would never recommend going here or...
Read moreMy wife and I have been to the BVI a few times. Last month was our first trip to JVD. We loved it! We utilized Jost Van Dyke Scuba for their water taxi service as well as two day sails.
Colin did a great job of communicating with me prior to our trip. He gave me the name and number of a taxi driver on St. Thomas who met us at the baggage claim area and got us to Red Hook in record time.
Adam, our captain on all three trips, was great! He contacted me the night before our trip and got our passport information for the customs forms we would need on our arrival at JVD. We only had to sign the forms. He was waiting for us in Red Hook and zipped us to Great Harbour. We waited in the boat while he took our paperwork through customs. A great improvement to the lines coming off the ferry in Road Town!
Our first day trip was around JVD. The Christmas winds had been blowing pretty good so Adam took us on a trip which minimized the impact. This was appreciated since my wife is prone to seasickness. We went to Great Thatch, Smuggler's Cove, Cane Garden Bay (including a quick trip to the Callwood Rum Distillery), Sandy Cay, and Little Jost Van Dyke. We had a great time and experienced no seasickness issues. The Dark and Stormy at Nigel's in Smuggler's Cove is the best!
Our second trip took us to the Indians, Norman, the Rhone, and Cooper. In addition to Adam, Mirkos (sp?) went along. And I'm glad he did! Adam and Mirkos swam with us every time we snorkeled. At the Indians a squall blew in and disoriented me. I made a wrong turn and found myself surrounded by rocks and coral. My wife had followed me. Adam and Mirkos were on us very quickly and got us out of a mess that could have ended badly. So glad we were with them!
The rest of the trip was very enjoyable. Lunch at Cooper. A tasting flight at the rum bar. The Rhone and then a beer at the Willy T. and back to Jost.
Everyone at JVD Scuba is professional, knowledgeable, and committed to providing their guests with a good time. I'll go with...
Read moreFirst off - so much more than scuba! I’m not sure what our vacation in Jost would have been like without Collin and his team. They were instrumental in so many parts of our trip from transport to rentals to day trips to general island guidance. Super reliable, punctual, and flexible with understanding the needs and comfort of our large group.
Some highlights:
The rentals - we got a dingy to travel around the island, SUP boards, and snorkel gear. All of it was delivered right to us with ease and plenty of explanation for how to use and enjoy it, and WHERE to use it (and then eat and drink after!) Having reliable gear opened up a ton of experiences for us.
Chartered trips: we took two charted trips with Poli, James, Tonic, and others. The first was a relaxing catamaran and they catered it to a large group with very diverse ages and levels of physical activity. It was wonderful, comfortable, and a ton of fun for a big group. The second trip was a smaller, more adventurous trip in a fast cat that included a couple of snorkeling spots and a trip through the Baths. Again, fun, safe, and they guided us within our level of comfort.
If you’re planning a trip to Jost, reach out to Collin and his team for ANYTHING you may need (not just scuba - not one of us knows the first thing about scuba). They will help you have an amazing and fun vacation and make the most of your time on Jost.
Oh, and the shop is awesome (and air...
