The monastery is located in the Rhodope Mountains, not far from the town of Assenovgrad. Founded in the 11th century, it is one of the oldest monasteries in the Balkan Peninsula. It was connected with three cultures: Byzantine, old Georgean and Bulgarian. It has preserved unique and highly valuable monuments of architecture and painting, typical of Eastern Orthodox culture. The monastery ossuary (11-12th century) is a two-storied chapel with murals in both stories. It is unique in the entire Eastern Orthodox world. The Church of the Holy Archangels is a rare example of a two- storied building from the 12th-14th centuries. The complex nature of this monument, its high degree of authenticity , its role in the cultural interrelationship of three nations during the Middle Ages, and the presence of valuable and unique monuments of architecture and painting determine its extraordinary significance.

It's beatufiul with its nature especially the waterfall and the old monastery, but I do wish there were some more activities there for example hiring a bicycle or even a lift there that can take you up on the hill, other than that it was only to visit the monastery and the waterfall and yet the Bazar where you can find ecological honey and jams and have lunch or dinner maybe even a tasty dessert. Lots of delicious barbecue. There is a bus which comes from bachkovo - monastery to Plovdiv for 4 lev and can take you at least down the hill if you have finished the visit in monastery. For now the bus comes around 15.00 and at the moment there are no other buses. Otherwise taxi is available and it cost around 5 lev to take you down. Taxi numbers which I trust are 0331 61 61 or 0331 6162. Hope i helped your travelling plan for now. Enjoy your trip at the monastery it's worth it.

💥Bachkovo monastery Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos The Bachkovo Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos is a major Eastern Orthodox monastery in Southern Bulgaria. The monastery is known and appreciated for the unique combination of Byzantine, Georgian and Bulgarian culture, united by the common faith. It is the second largest monastery in Bulgaria. There are 2 churches in the complex, but only one is open to the public. The monastery was founded in 1083 by Prince Gregory Pakourianos, a prominent statesman and military commander in the Byzantineservice, as a Georgian-dominated Orthodox monastery. Although the monastery survived the first waves of Turkish invasion in Bulgarian lands, it was then looted and destroyed, but restored near the end of the 15th century. The only part that has survived from the monastery's original structure is the ossuary, which has a specific architectural design and ancient frescoes, and is situated 300 m away from the contemporary monastery complex. The Cathedral Church of the Virgin Mary (dating from 1604) is the place where a valuable icon of the Virgin Mary Eleusa from 1310 is kept (brought from Georgia) which is believed to be miraculous. This church was built in the place of the monastery's oldest church destroyed by the Turks. Another medieval church of the monastery is the Archangels' Church dating back probably to the 12th century, the vaulted open narthex of which was painted by Zahari Zograf in 1841. The inside of the church was painted by the artist Joan Mosch in 1846.

I’ve been here as a kid but couldn’t remember much, so I decided to revisit again as an adult. Very peaceful place, and makes you wonder about what life was like back in the day when it was built. The church is gorgeous and the courtyard is quite relaxing when there are no people. I went around 9:30 AM on a weekday and there was barely anyone. Learned that if you want a tour, you can request one at the museum. Also, they have white pigeons and peacocks! Recommend if you are in the area. P.S. for the avid hikers, there is a path leading from the monastery to Asenova Fortress. Had I had the time, I would’ve done it. The area is absolutely gorgeous.

This sacred place combines the beauty of the surrounding nature with the warm and welcoming atmosphere of one of the biggest monasteries in Bulgaria. It is free to enter and have a walk in the yard and the church. However, the small museum has a ticket. There are a lot of kiosks around offering everything from traditional Bulgarian dishes to BBQ for lunch, local dairy products, jam, nuts and even corn. Bear in mind, that the prices are little higher than usual, but the traders are open to discounts. A great idea for a family day trip - just 30 minutes away from Plovdiv. It is easy to reach by car and offers paid parking on site.
