Everything Was Complicated – We Never Made It to the Zoo, but Maybe This Info Will Help You
Because the weather forecast showed light rain and only 25°C, we decided to take a trip from Sunny Beach to the Burgas Zoo. It didn’t go exactly as planned—but it was still an adventure worth sharing.
We took a local bus from the stop in front of the ALDO supermarket, right across from Helena Hotel.
Local buses (lines 5 or 8) run every 15–20 minutes throughout the day.
You buy your ticket directly on the bus from a conductor (they walk through the bus selling tickets).
Sunny Beach buses do not have air-conditioning and can get really crowded.
We rode the bus to Sunny Beach Central Bus Station and from there caught a direct intercity bus to Burgas South Station. For 1 adult and 2 kids, the fare was 17 BGN total – 8 BGN for the adult and 4.5 BGN per child. The ride took about 75 minutes and was smooth overall.
Once we arrived at Burgas South Station, we transferred to Bus #11. The ticket was 1.50 BGN per person. We got off at the Hospital bus stop.
From there, we waited for Bus #6, which goes to the Burgas Zoo. Unfortunately, we had just missed one, and the next one wasn’t coming for more than 30 minutes. We decided to explore the neighborhood a little while we waited, but soon the rain started—not just a drizzle, but a steady rain. With kids, that meant the zoo was no longer an option, so we decided to change plans.
We headed back toward the city center and visited the Museum of Illusions in Burgas instead. It turned out to be a fun and interactive backup, especially for kids, and it's very close to the bus station.
Out of curiosity, I messaged a taxi company I found online to ask how much it would cost to take us to the Burgas Zoo. The first reply I got was “200 BGN.” I politely thanked them—and two minutes later, they sent a follow-up: “That’s for both ways, with waiting time included. So if you’re considering taking a taxi, yes, it’s much easier—but definitely not cheap. The total cost for our round trip (including all local and intercity buses for 1 adult and 2 children) came to 53 BGN. So if you're on a budget, this is still a very affordable day trip—even if you don't make it to the zoo in the end.
Even though we never made it to the zoo, it was still a day full of...
Read moreVery poorly managed, with no infrastructure (extremely difficult to move around with a stroller or wheelchair), very expensive for what your are getting - on top of an entrance fee you have to pay for separate petting areas 25 lv for each area to enter with a child under 12 for 15 minutes, but you can hardly spend even 5 minutes in there because, there are so few animals in each area you pay for… Employees are extremely lazy. Al in all, it seemed like a place to torture animals - majority of them were living in poor conditions, with hardly any shade in the tiny cages when the heat outside is over 35 degrees in the summer months. The kids playgrounds that are present seem ancient, like from the communist era, when they are only few years old. To sum up - should be closed, animals are not in suitable conditions for their natural habitat, extremely expensive, and was not worth the time we lost. I am hoping the authorities will do something and close it, because apparently it’s...
Read moreI visited on 28th of June 2025 for capybaras. Besides the fact that the zoo was in terrible conditions for the animals (small cages and areas for animals, dirt, zoo in the middle of nowhere with no vegetation to protect the animals and the area from heatwaves), the capybaras were showing almost every sign of depression and/or sickness: lethargy, isolating and hiding from visitors, negative response to touches and affection, barely eating, separated from each other, no sounds and communication with each other and the visitors etc. moreover, their overall appearance was poorly looking: they have sunken and sad eyes, patches, their fur look dry, one of them presented injuries in one leg. their environment is not suitable at all for them: little to no vegetation, their pool is too small and the water was VERY dirty, and no bamboo for them to eat. please stop neglecting them and create an adequate space for...
