It is a bit hard to rate the Krakra fortress. Thinking about the restorations works on the ancient fortress - it is terribly restored. It looks and feels cheap and has no added value - no interesting information left, no internal restoration. Although the old walls on the inside are left in a good condition, which is good - with some imagination you can restore the old fortress in your mind. BUT as a place to visit - it is wonderful. It is just outside the town - close to the center, but it is in the open nature, it is on a high point so you have a wonderful view in the town's direction, also with the restoration done they have put lots of benches, internal lightning and stuff that make it a great place for a walk. There is a caffee just under the entrance so you can grab a coffee or a beer while you hang out. So as a place to visit it is great and I recommend it. Also it is beautiful at night and as I said there are lights all over the place so it feels comfortable. In working hours the entrance fee is 2 euro but in the evening there are no people working on the barrier - just a guard, so you can enter and enjoy it for free! In my opinion -...

Krakra Fortress

Information The medieval Pernik fortress Krakra is located on a rocky plateau in the southwestern part of the town of Pernik. The preserved remains of the fortress form a polygonal shape. Foundations of residential buildings and three Christian churches have been preserved, one of which is among the earliest two-story church-tombs in the Christian world. In addition, an attraction for visitors to the fortress are the catapults and the wall-piercing cannons, which are located along one of the fortress walls. The panoramic platforms mounted on the fortress walls allow a view from above of the entire city and its surroundings. The fortress also has a stage on which theatrical productions and concerts...

Easily accessible fortress, free entry, has benches to rest and is about 20 minutes from the railway station. However we were kind of worried as some house dogs were barking at us on the way and had to cross the road a few times. Better to get here by car, a lot of strays in the city too. There is an artificial new tower made for views and a wall to take a look at the city. The place itself has been used by humans for more than 2500 years for sure.

Part of bulgarian history, this is a must see place for most of those who live in the Sofia area. Unfortunately, the same people don't know that place exists. Apart from that, this is a beautiful area with a nice view above Pernik city. Recommend visiting it and enjoying your walk around the area.
